1When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, heaven was silent for about half an hour. 2And I saw the seven angels who stand before God. They were given seven trumpets. 3Then another angel came and stood at the altar. He had a gold censer. He was given a lot of incense to offer on the gold altar in front of the throne. He offered it along with the prayers of all God's people. 4The smoke of the incense went up before God from the angel's hand. The prayers of God's people went up with it. 5Then the angel took the censer. He filled it with fire from the altar and threw it down on the earth. There were claps of thunder, rumbling sounds, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake. 6Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets got ready to blow them. 7The first angel blew his trumpet. Hail and fire mixed with blood were thrown down on the earth. A third of the earth was burned up. A third of the trees were burned up. And all the green grass was burned up. 8The second angel blew his trumpet. Something like a huge mountain on fire was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood. 9A third of the living creatures in the sea died. And a third of the ships were destroyed. 10The third angel blew his trumpet. A great star burning like a torch fell from the sky. It fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11The star's name is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter like wormwood oil. Many people died from drinking the bitter water. 12The fourth angel blew his trumpet. A third of the sun was struck. So were a third of the moon and a third of the stars. A third of them turned dark. A third of the day had no light, and a third of the night too. 13As I watched, I heard an eagle flying high in the sky. It called out in a loud voice, "How terrible! How terrible! How terrible it will be for those who live on the earth! The other three angels are about to blow their trumpets!"
