1Then I watched the Lamb open the first of the seven seals. I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, "Come!" 2I looked, and there was a white horse! Its rider held a bow. He was given a crown. He rode out to win battles and to conquer. 3When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!" 4Then another horse came out. It was fiery red. Its rider was allowed to take peace away from the earth. He was allowed to make people kill each other. He was given a large sword. 5When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there was a black horse! Its rider held a pair of scales in his hand. 6Then I heard what sounded like a voice from among the four living creatures. It said, "A quart of wheat for a day's pay. Three quarts of barley for a day's pay. But do not harm the oil and the wine."a 7When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come!" 8I looked, and there was a pale green horse! Its rider's name was Death. Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth. They could kill by sword, by hunger, by sickness, and by the wild animals of the earth. 9When the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw souls under the altar. They had been killed for the word of God and for standing firm in their witness. 10They cried out in a loud voice, "Holy and true Lord, how long will it be? When will you judge the people who live on the earth? When will you pay them back for our blood?" 11Then each of them was given a white robe. They were told to rest a little longer. More of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters, would be killed just as they had been. They were to wait until the full number had been killed. 12I watched as the Lamb opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair. The whole moon turned red like blood. 13The stars in the sky fell to the earth. They fell like unripe figs drop from a tree shaken by a strong wind. 14The sky was pulled back like a scroll being rolled up. Every mountain and island was moved from its place. 15Then everyone hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. The kings of the earth hid. So did the nobles, the army leaders, the rich, and the powerful. Every slave and every free person hid too. 16They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us! Hide us from the face of the one sitting on the throne! Hide us from the anger of the Lamb! 17For the great day of their anger has come. And who can stand up to it?"
