1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. For the first heaven and earth had passed away. And there was no more sea. 2I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It was made ready like a bride dressed up for her husband. 3I heard a loud voice from the throne. It said: "Look! God's home is now with people, and he will live with them. They will be his people. God himself will be with them as their God. 4'He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.' There will be no more death or sadness or crying or pain. For the old things have passed away." 5The One sitting on the throne said, "Look! I am making all things new." Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are faithful and true." 6He said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give water to the thirsty for free. It will come from the spring of the water of life. 7The one who overcomes will inherit all things. I will be his God, and he will be my son. 8But some will have their place in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. These are cowards and those who do not believe. They are the disgusting, the murderers, and the sexually immoral. They are those who do magic, those who worship idols, and all liars. This is the second death." 9Then one of the seven angels came to me. He was one of the angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues. He said, "Come. I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." 10He carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain. He showed me the holy city of Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. 11It shone with the glory of God. Its brightness was like a very precious jewel. It was like jasper, as clear as crystal. 12The city had a great, high wall with twelve gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. Twelve angels stood at the gates. 13There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south, and three on the west. 14The city wall had twelve foundations. On them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15The angel who talked with me had a gold measuring rod. It was for measuring the city, its gates, and its wall. 16The city was laid out as a square. It was as wide as it was long. He measured the city with the rod. Its length, width, and height were all the same, about 1,400 miles.a 17He measured its wall too. It was about 216 feet. The angel was using a human measure.b 18The wall was made of jasper. The city itself was made of pure gold, as clear as glass. 19The foundations of the city wall were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper. The second was sapphire. The third was chalcedony. The fourth was emerald. 20The fifth was sardonyx. The sixth was carnelian. The seventh was chrysolite. The eighth was beryl. The ninth was topaz. The tenth was chrysoprase. The eleventh was jacinth. The twelfth was amethyst. 21The twelve gates were twelve pearls. Each gate was made of a single pearl. The main street of the city was pure gold, as clear as glass. 22I did not see a temple in the city. That is because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it. That is because the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24The nations will walk by its light. The kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. 25Its gates will never be shut at the end of the day, because there will be no night there. 26The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into the city. 27But nothing unclean will ever enter it. No one who does disgusting things or tells lies will enter. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life will enter.
