PsalmsChapter 74

1A maskil of Asaph.
God, why have you turned us away forever?
Why does your anger smoke against the sheep in your field?a
2Remember your people.
You bought them long ago.
You redeemed them to be the tribe that belongs to you.
Remember Mount Zion, where you live.
3Walk over to these ruins that last forever.
See all that the enemy has destroyed in the holy place.
4Your enemies have roared in the place where you met with us.
They have set up their flags as signs.
5They were like men swinging axes
in a thick group of trees.
6They smashed all the carved wood
with hatchets and picks.
7They burned your holy place to the ground.
They made the home of your Name unclean.
8They said in their hearts, "We will crush them completely!"
They burned down every place in the land where God met with us.
9We see no signs.
There are no more prophets.
None of us knows how long this will last.
10God, how long will the enemy make fun of you?
Will the enemy insult your name forever?
11Why do you hold back your strong right hand?
Reach it out and destroy them!
12But God has been my King from long ago.
He brings rescue on the earth.
13You split the sea by your strength.
You smashed the heads of the sea monsters.
14You crushed the heads of Leviathan.
You fed him to the animals of the desert.
15You opened up springs and streams.
You dried up rivers that always flowed.
16The day belongs to you, and so does the night.
You put the moon and the sun in place.
17You set all the borders of the earth.
You made summer and winter.
18LORD, remember how the enemy has made fun of you.
Remember how foolish people have hated your name.
19Do not give the life of your dove to wild animals.
Do not forget the lives of your suffering people forever.
20Think about your covenant,
for violent people fill the dark places of the land.
21Do not let the people who are mistreated turn back in shame.
May the poor and needy praise your name.
22Rise up, God, and stand up for your cause!
Remember how fools make fun of you all day long.
23Do not ignore the shouts of your enemies.
The noise of those against you keeps rising up.
