¹A psalm of Asaph.
The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks.
He calls the earth
from where the sun rises to where it sets. ²God shines out from Zion,
the city that is perfect in beauty. ³Our God is coming, and he will not be silent!
A fire that burns up everything goes in front of him.
A great storm rages around him. ⁴He calls to the heavens above and to the earth,
so that he can judge his people: ⁵"Gather my holy people to me.
They made a covenant with me by sacrifice." ⁶And the heavens tell how righteous he is,
for God himself is the Judge. Selah ⁷"Listen, my people, and I will speak.
Israel, I will be a witness against you.
I am God, your God. ⁸I do not scold you for your sacrifices.
Your burnt offerings are always in front of me. ⁹I do not need a bull from your barn
or goats from your pens. ¹⁰For every animal of the forest is mine.
So are the cattle on a thousand hills. ¹¹I know every bird in the mountains.
The creatures of the field are mine. ¹²If I were hungry, I would not tell you.
For the world is mine, and everything in it. ¹³Do I eat the meat of bulls?
Do I drink the blood of goats? ¹⁴Bring God a thank offering.
Keep your promises to the Most High. ¹⁵Call on me when trouble comes.
I will rescue you, and you will honor me." ¹⁶But God says to the wicked person,
"What right do you have to recite my laws?
Why do you talk about my covenant? ¹⁷For you hate my teaching.
You throw my words behind you. ¹⁸When you see a thief, you make friends with him.
You join in with people who commit adultery. ¹⁹You let your mouth loose to say evil things.
You use your tongue to tell lies. ²⁰You sit and speak against your brother.
You tell lies about your own mother's son. ²¹You did these things, and I kept quiet.
You thought I was just like you.
But now I will scold you.
I will blame you to your face. ²²Now think about this, you who forget God.
If you don't, I will tear you to pieces,
and no one will save you. ²³The one who brings a thank offering honors me.
To the one who lives the right way,
I will show how God saves."
