1For the choir leader. To the tune of "The Doe of the Dawn." A psalm of David.
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
so far from my words of groaning?
2My God, I cry out in the daytime, but you do not answer.
I cry out at night, but I find no rest.
3Yet you are holy.
You sit on your throne, and Israel's praises surround you.
4Our fathers trusted in you.
They trusted, and you saved them.
5They cried out to you and were set free.
They trusted in you and were not let down.
6But I am a worm and not a man.
People laugh at me and look down on me.
7All who see me make fun of me.
They sneer and shake their heads.
8They say, "He trusts in the LORD.
Let the LORD save him.
Let the LORD rescue him, since he is pleased with him."
9Yet you brought me out of my mother's womb.
You kept me safe when I nursed at my mother's breast.
10From the time I was born, I was placed in your care.
You have been my God since I was in my mother's womb.
11Do not be far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is no one to help.
12Many bulls surround me.
Strong bulls from Bashan circle around me.
13They open their mouths wide against me,
like lions that roar and rip their prey.
14I am poured out like water.
All my bones are out of joint.
My heart is like wax.
It melts away inside me.
15My strength is dried up like a broken piece of pottery.
My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.
You lay me down in the dust of death.
16For dogs surround me.
A gang of evil men circles around me.
They have pierced my hands and feet.
17I can count all my bones.
People stare at me and are glad to see me suffer.
18They divide my clothes among them.
They cast lots for my clothing.
19But you, LORD, do not be far away.
You are my strength. Come quickly to help me.
20Save my soul from the sword.
Save my precious life from the power of wild dogs.
21Save me from the mouth of the lion.
You have answered me from the horns of the wild oxen!
22I will tell my brothers about your name.
I will praise you when your people meet together.
23You who fear the LORD, praise him!
All you children of Jacob, honor him!
All you children of Israel, stand in awe of him!
24For he has not looked down on or hated the pain of the one who suffers.
He has not hidden his face from him.
He has listened to his cry for help.
25My praise for you rings out in the great meeting of your people.
I will keep my promises in front of those who fear you.
26The poor will eat and be full.
Those who seek the LORD will praise him.
May your hearts live forever!
27All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD.
All the families of the nations will bow down before him.
28For the right to rule belongs to the LORD.
He rules over the nations.
29All the rich people of the earth will feast and worship.
All who go down to the dust will kneel before him.
Even those who cannot keep themselves alive will kneel.
30Their children will serve him.
They will tell the next generation about the Lord.
31They will come and tell how righteous he is.
They will tell people not yet born
all that he has done.
