1For the choir director. A psalm of David.
O God, the one I praise, do not be silent.
2For wicked and lying mouths are open against me.
They speak against me with lying tongues.
3They surround me with hateful words.
They attack me for no reason.
4In return for my love, they accuse me.
But I am a man of prayer.
5They pay me back evil for good.
They give me hate for my love.
6Put a wicked man in charge over him.
Let an accuser stand at his right hand.
7When he is put on trial, let him be found guilty.
May even his prayer be counted as sin.
8May his days be few.
May someone else take his place.
9May his children have no father.
May his wife become a widow.
10May his children wander around as beggars.
May they search for food far from their ruined homes.
11May the man he owes take everything he owns.
May strangers steal what he worked for.
12May no one show him kindness.
May no one be good to his fatherless children.
13May his family line be cut off.
May their name be wiped out in the next generation.
14May the LORD remember the sins of his fathers.
May the sin of his mother never be wiped away.
15May their sins always stay before the LORD,
so he may wipe out their memory from the earth.
16For he never thought about showing kindness.
Instead, he hunted down the poor and needy
and those with broken hearts, even to their death.
17He loved to curse others. May the curse fall on him.
He did not enjoy blessing others. May blessing be far from him.
18He wore cursing like a coat.
May it soak into his body like water,
and into his bones like oil.
19May it be like a robe wrapped around him.
May it be like a belt tied around him forever.
20May this be how the LORD pays back my accusers,
those who speak evil against me.
21But you, O Lord GOD, be kind to me for the sake of your name.
Your faithful love is good, so rescue me.
22For I am poor and needy.
My heart is wounded inside me.
23I am fading away like a shadow at the end of the day.
I am shaken off like a locust.
24My knees are weak from going without food.
My body is getting thin and bony.
25My accusers make fun of me.
When they see me, they shake their heads.
26Help me, O LORD my God.
Save me because of your faithful love.
27Let them know that this is your hand.
Let them know that you, O LORD, have done it.
28They may curse, but you will bless.
When they rise up, they will be put to shame.
But your servant will be glad.
29May my accusers be dressed in disgrace.
May they wear their shame like a robe.
30With my mouth I will thank the LORD very much.
I will praise him in front of many people.
31For he stands at the right hand of the needy person.
He saves his life from those who condemn him.
