1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good.
His faithful love lasts forever.
2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so. He has redeemed them, buying them back from the hand of the enemy. 3He gathered them from the lands,
from east and west, from north and south.
4Some wandered in empty deserts.
They found no path to a city where they could live.
5They were hungry and thirsty.
Their life was fading away inside them.
6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble.
And he rescued them from their pain.
7He led them on a straight path
to reach a city where they could live.
8Let them thank the LORD for his faithful love
and for the wonders he does for people.
9For he gives the thirsty all they need.
He fills the hungry with good things.
10Some sat in darkness, in the shadow of death.
They were prisoners in misery and chains.
11This was because they rebelled against the words of God.
They looked down on the advice of the Most High.
12So he humbled their hearts with hard work.
They stumbled, and no one was there to help.
13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble.
And he saved them from their pain.
14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death.
He broke off their chains.
15Let them thank the LORD for his faithful love
and for the wonders he does for people.
16For he has broken down the gates of bronze.
He has cut through the bars of iron.
17Some were fools who went their own rebel ways.
Because of their sins, they suffered.
18They hated the sight of all food.
They came near to the gates of death.
19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble.
And he saved them from their pain.
20He sent out his word and healed them.
He rescued them from the pit of death.
21Let them thank the LORD for his faithful love
and for the wonders he does for people.
22Let them offer sacrifices of thanks.
Let them tell about his works with songs of joy.
23Others went out to sea in ships.
They traded goods on the mighty waters.
24They saw the works of the LORD.
They saw his wonders in the deep sea.
25For he spoke and stirred up a great storm.
It lifted up the waves of the sea.
26The sailors rose up to the sky,
then sank down to the depths.
Their courage melted away in their fear.
27They rolled and staggered like drunk men.
All their skill was no use.
28Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble.
And he brought them out of their pain.
29He calmed the storm to a whisper.
The waves of the sea grew still.
30They were glad when it was quiet.
And he guided them to the harbor they wanted.
31Let them thank the LORD for his faithful love
and for the wonders he does for people.
32Let them lift him up in the gathering of the people.
Let them praise him in the meeting of the elders.
33He turns rivers into deserts.
He turns springs of water into thirsty ground.
34He turns good farmland into fields of salt.
He does this because the people living there are wicked.
35He turns a desert into pools of water.
He turns dry land into flowing springs.
36He lets the hungry settle there,
so that they can build a city where they can live.
37They plant fields and vineyards.
These give them a rich harvest.
38He blesses them, and they grow into many people.
He does not let their herds get smaller.
39When they become few and are brought low
by cruel rulers, by evil, and by sorrow,
40he pours out shame on the nobles.
He makes them wander in a wasteland with no paths.
41But he lifts the needy out of their suffering.
He makes their families grow like flocks.
42Honest people see it and are glad.
And all evil shuts its mouth.
43Whoever is wise, let him pay attention to these things.
Let him think about the faithful love of the LORD.
