1So, does being in Christ encourage you? Does his love comfort you? Do you share in the Spirit together? Do you have any tender love and kindness? 2If so, then make my joy full. Think the same way. Have the same love. Be one in spirit and in purpose. 3Don't do anything just to get ahead or because you are proud. Be humble. Think of others as more important than yourselves. 4Each of you should not just look out for yourself. You should look out for others too. 5You should think the same way Christ Jesus thought. 6He was in the form of God. But he did not think being equal with God was something to grab for himself. 7Instead, he emptied himself. He took the form of a servant. He was made to be like a human. 8He looked like a man. And he made himself humble. He obeyed all the way to death. He even died on a cross! 9So God lifted him up to the highest place. God gave him the name that is above every name. 10So at the name of Jesus every knee should bow. Everyone in heaven, on earth, and under the earth should bow. 11And every tongue should say that Jesus Christ is Lord. This brings glory to God the Father. 12So, my dear friends, you have always obeyed. You obeyed when I was with you. Now that I am away, obey even more. Keep working out your salvation with fear and trembling. 13For God is the one working in you. He helps you want to do what pleases him. And he helps you do it, for his good purpose. 14Do everything without complaining or arguing. 15Then you will be pure and without blame. You will be God's children with no fault. You live among people who are crooked and twisted. Among them you shine like lights in the world. 16You shine as you hold out the word of life. Then I can be proud on the day Christ comes. I will know that I did not run my race or work for nothing. 17Your faith is like a sacrifice and service to God. My life may be poured out like a drink offering on top of it. Even so, I am glad. I am full of joy with all of you. 18So you should be glad too. Be full of joy with me. 19I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon. Then I will be cheered up too when I hear how you are doing. 20I have no one else like him. He truly cares about what you need. 21All the others look out for themselves. They don't care about what matters to Jesus Christ. 22But you know Timothy has proved himself. He has worked with me like a son with his father. Together we have spread the good news. 23So I hope to send him to you as soon as I see how things go for me. 24And I trust the Lord that I will come soon myself. 25But I thought I should send Epaphroditus back to you. He is my brother. He works with me and fights beside me like a soldier. He is also the messenger you sent to take care of my needs. 26He has been missing all of you. He is upset because you heard he was sick. 27He really was sick, and he almost died. But God had mercy on him. God also had mercy on me. He kept me from having one sorrow on top of another. 28So I am even more eager to send him. When you see him again, you can be glad. And I will worry less. 29Welcome him in the Lord with great joy. Honor people like him. 30Do this because he almost died doing the work of Christ. He risked his life to give me the help you could not give.
