1After the plague was over, the LORD spoke to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest. He said, 2"Count the whole community of Israel by their families. Count all those twenty years old or older who can serve in Israel's army." 3So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke to the people. They were on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho. They said, 4"Count the men twenty years old or older, as the LORD commanded Moses." These are the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt: 5Reuben was Israel's firstborn son. These were Reuben's descendants: the Hanochite clan from Hanoch and the Palluite clan from Pallu, 6the Hezronite clan from Hezron, and the Carmite clan from Carmi. 7These were the clans of Reuben. They counted 43,730 men. 8Pallu's son was Eliab. 9Eliab's sons were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. The people had chosen Dathan and Abiram as leaders. But these two rebelled against Moses and Aaron. They joined Korah's followers when they rebelled against the LORD. 10Then the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, along with Korah. His followers died when fire burned up 250 men. They became a warning sign. 11But Korah's family line did not die out. 12These were Simeon's descendants by their clans: the Nemuelite clan from Nemuel, the Jaminite clan from Jamin, the Jachinite clan from Jachin, 13the Zerahite clan from Zerah, and the Shaulite clan from Shaul. 14These were the clans of Simeon. There were 22,200 men. 15These were Gad's descendants by their clans: the Zephonite clan from Zephon, the Haggite clan from Haggi, the Shunite clan from Shuni, 16the Oznite clan from Ozni, the Erite clan from Eri, 17the Arodite clan from Arod, and the Arelite clan from Areli. 18These were the clans of Gad. They counted 40,500 men. 19Judah's sons were Er and Onan. But they died in the land of Canaan. 20These were Judah's descendants by their clans: the Shelanite clan from Shelah, the Perezite clan from Perez, and the Zerahite clan from Zerah. 21These were the descendants of Perez: the Hezronite clan from Hezron and the Hamulite clan from Hamul. 22These were the clans of Judah. They counted 76,500 men. 23These were Issachar's descendants by their clans: the Tolaite clan from Tola, the Punite clan from Puvah, 24the Jashubite clan from Jashub, and the Shimronite clan from Shimron. 25These were the clans of Issachar. They counted 64,300 men. 26These were Zebulun's descendants by their clans: the Seredite clan from Sered, the Elonite clan from Elon, and the Jahleelite clan from Jahleel. 27These were the clans of Zebulun. They counted 60,500 men. 28Joseph's descendants were the clans of Manasseh and Ephraim. 29These were Manasseh's descendants: the Machirite clan from Machir, and the Gileadite clan from Gilead. Machir was Gilead's father. 30These were Gilead's descendants: the Iezerite clan from Iezer, the Helekite clan from Helek, 31the Asrielite clan from Asriel, the Shechemite clan from Shechem, 32the Shemidaite clan from Shemida, and the Hepherite clan from Hepher. 33Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons. He had only daughters. Their names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 34These were the clans of Manasseh. They counted 52,700 men. 35These were Ephraim's descendants by their clans: the Shuthelahite clan from Shuthelah, the Becherite clan from Becher, and the Tahanite clan from Tahan. 36These were Shuthelah's descendants: the Eranite clan from Eran. 37These were the clans of Ephraim. They counted 32,500 men. These clans were Joseph's descendants. 38These were Benjamin's descendants by their clans: the Belaite clan from Bela, the Ashbelite clan from Ashbel, the Ahiramite clan from Ahiram, 39the Shuphamite clan from Shupham, and the Huphamite clan from Hupham. 40Bela's descendants through Ard and Naaman were the Ardite clan from Ard and the Naamite clan from Naaman. 41These were the clans of Benjamin. They counted 45,600 men. 42These were Dan's descendants by their clans: the Shuhamite clan from Shuham. These were the clans of Dan. 43All of them were Shuhamite clans. They counted 64,400 men. 44These were Asher's descendants by their clans: the Imnite clan from Imnah, the Ishvite clan from Ishvi, and the Beriite clan from Beriah. 45These were Beriah's descendants: the Heberite clan from Heber and the Malchielite clan from Malchiel. 46Asher had a daughter named Serah. 47These were the clans of Asher. They counted 53,400 men. 48These were Naphtali's descendants by their clans: the Jahzeelite clan from Jahzeel, the Gunite clan from Guni, 49the Jezerite clan from Jezer, and the Shillemite clan from Shillem. 50These were the clans of Naphtali. They counted 45,400 men. 51All together, the men of Israel numbered 601,730. 52Then the LORD said to Moses, 53"Divide the land among the tribes as their inheritance. Divide it by the number of names counted. 54Give a large tribe more land, and give a small tribe less. Each tribe will get land based on the number of people counted in it. 55But the land must be divided by casting lots. Each tribe will get its share by the name of its father's tribe. 56Each share is to be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes." 57These were the Levites counted by their clans: the Gershonite clan from Gershon, the Kohathite clan from Kohath, and the Merarite clan from Merari. 58These were the families of the Levites: the Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, and the Korahite clan. Kohath was the father of Amram. 59Amram's wife was named Jochebed. She was also from Levi's family. She was born to Levi in Egypt. She had three children with Amram: Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam. 60Aaron's sons were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 61But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered fire before the LORD that he had not allowed. 62The Levites counted 23,000 in all. This was every male one month old or older. They were not counted with the other Israelites. That is because they were not given any land as an inheritance among the Israelites. 63These are the people counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest. They counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho. 64But not one of these people had been counted before by Moses and Aaron the priest. That was when they counted the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai. 65That was because the LORD had told those people that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one of them was left, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
