¹Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said, ²"The Israelites must camp around the Tent of Meeting, a short distance away from it. Each man must camp under his flag with the banners of his family. ³On the east side, toward the sunrise, the army groups of Judah will camp under their flag. The leader of the people of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab. ⁴His army group numbers 74,600. ⁵The tribe of Issachar will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Issachar is Nethanel son of Zuar. ⁶His army group numbers 54,400. ⁷Next will be the tribe of Zebulun. The leader of the people of Zebulun is Eliab son of Helon. ⁸His army group numbers 57,400. ⁹The total number of men in the camp of Judah is 186,400. They will move out first. ¹⁰On the south side, the army groups of Reuben will camp under their flag. The leader of the people of Reuben is Elizur son of Shedeur. ¹¹His army group numbers 46,500. ¹²The tribe of Simeon will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Simeon is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. ¹³His army group numbers 59,300. ¹⁴Next will be the tribe of Gad. The leader of the people of Gad is Eliasaph son of Deuel. ¹⁵His army group numbers 45,650. ¹⁶The total number of men in the camp of Reuben is 151,450. They will move out second. ¹⁷The Tent of Meeting will travel with the camp of the Levites in the middle of the camps. The tribes will move out in the same order as they camp. Each one will be in its own place under its flag. ¹⁸On the west side, the army groups of Ephraim will camp under their flag. The leader of the people of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud. ¹⁹His army group numbers 40,500. ²⁰The tribe of Manasseh will be next to them. The leader of the people of Manasseh is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. ²¹His army group numbers 32,200. ²²Next will be the tribe of Benjamin. The leader of the people of Benjamin is Abidan son of Gideoni. ²³His army group numbers 35,400. ²⁴The total number of men in the camp of Ephraim is 108,100. They will move out third. ²⁵On the north side, the army groups of Dan will camp under their flag. The leader of the people of Dan is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. ²⁶His army group numbers 62,700. ²⁷The tribe of Asher will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Asher is Pagiel son of Ocran. ²⁸His army group numbers 41,500. ²⁹Next will be the tribe of Naphtali. The leader of the people of Naphtali is Ahira son of Enan. ³⁰His army group numbers 53,400. ³¹The total number of men in the camp of Dan is 157,600. They will move out last, under their flags." ³²These are the Israelites, counted by their families. The total number counted in the camps by their army groups was 603,550. ³³But the Levites were not counted with the other Israelites. This was just as the LORD had commanded Moses. ³⁴So the Israelites did everything the LORD commanded Moses. They camped under their flags in this way. And they moved out in the same way. Each man went with his clan and his family.
