1Nineveh, someone who scatters is coming to attack you.
Guard the fortress!
Watch the road!
Get ready!
Gather all your strength!
2For the LORD will bring back the glory of Jacob, like the glory of Israel.
He will do this even though destroyers have ruined them
and wrecked the branches of their vine.
3The shields of his mighty men are red.
His brave warriors are dressed in bright red.
The metal on the chariots flashes like fire on the day they are made ready.
The spears made of cypress wood are waved in the air.
4The chariots race wildly through the streets.
They rush back and forth in the city squares.
They look like torches.
They dart around like lightning.
5He calls for his nobles.
They stumble as they come forward.
They run to the city wall.
The shield for protection is set in place.
6The gates by the river are thrown open.
The palace falls down.
7It has been ordered that the city be taken away as captives.
Her servant girls moan like doves.
They beat their chests in sorrow.
8All her days, Nineveh has been like a pool of water.
But now the water is draining away.
"Stop! Stop!" they cry.
But no one turns back.
9"Take the silver!
Take the gold!"
The treasure never ends.
There are piles of every kind of precious thing.
10She is empty!
Yes, she is ruined and wasted!
Hearts melt with fear, and knees knock.
Bodies shake, and every face turns pale!
11Where is the lions' den now?
Where is the place where the young lions fed?
The lion and lioness walked there with their cubs.
Nothing scared them away.
12The lion killed enough for its cubs.
It choked prey for the lioness.
It filled its dens with what it killed.
It filled its caves with torn-up prey.
13"Look, I am against you," says the LORD of Hosts.
"I will burn up your chariots in smoke.
The sword will kill your young lions.
I will cut off your prey from the earth.
No one will hear the voices of your messengers anymore."
