1Jesus finished giving orders to his twelve disciples. Then he went on from there to teach and preach in their towns. 2John was in prison. He heard about the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples 3to ask Jesus, "Are you the one who was to come? Or should we look for someone else?" 4Jesus answered, "Go back and tell John what you hear and see. 5The blind can see. The lame can walk. Those with leprosy are made clean. The deaf can hear. The dead are raised to life. And the good news is preached to the poor. 6Blessed is anyone who does not fall away because of me." 7As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to talk to the crowds about John. "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed blowing in the wind? 8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, people who wear fine clothes live in kings' palaces. 9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10He is the one it is written about: 'Look, I will send my messenger ahead of you. He will prepare your way before you.' 11I tell you the truth, no one born of a woman has been greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least person in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he is. 12From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence. And violent people try to take hold of it. 13All the Prophets and the Law spoke about what was coming until John came. 14If you are willing to accept it, John is the Elijah who was to come. 15Whoever has ears should listen. 16What can I compare the people of today to? They are like children sitting in the market. They call out to other children, 17'We played the flute for you, and you didn't dance. We sang a sad song, and you didn't cry.' 18John came and did not eat or drink like others. And they say, 'He has a demon!' 19The Son of Man came eating and drinking. And they say, 'Look at him! He eats too much and drinks too much wine. He is a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' But wisdom is proved right by what she does." 20Then Jesus began to speak strongly against the towns where he had done most of his miracles. He did this because they did not repent. 21"How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible for you, Bethsaida! Suppose the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon. They would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22But I tell you, it will be easier for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will go down to Hades! Suppose the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom. It would still be here today. 24But I tell you, it will be easier for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you." 25At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and educated. And you have shown them to little children. 26Yes, Father, this is what pleased you. 27My Father has given all things to me. No one knows the Son except the Father. And no one knows the Father except the Son. Others know him only if the Son chooses to show him to them. 28Come to me, all of you who are tired and carry heavy loads. I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke on you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart. And you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my load is light."
