1Very early on the first day of the week, the women went to the tomb. They took the spices they had made ready. 2They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb. 3But when they went in, they didn't find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4They were wondering about this. Suddenly two men in shining clothes stood beside them. 5The women were terrified and bowed down with their faces to the ground. The two men asked them, "Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? 6He is not here. He has risen! Remember what he told you while he was still in Galilee. 7He said, 'The Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men. He must be crucified. And on the third day he must rise again.'" 8Then the women remembered what Jesus had said. 9They came back from the tomb. They told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. They and the other women with them told these things to the apostles. 11But the apostles thought their words were nonsense. They didn't believe the women. 12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He bent down and looked in. He saw only the strips of linen cloth. Then he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.a 13That same day, two of Jesus' followers were walking to a village called Emmaus. It was about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself came up and walked with them. 16But their eyes were kept from knowing who he was. 17He asked them, "What are you talking about so seriously as you walk along?" They stood still, and their faces were sad. 18One of them, named Cleopas, said to him, "Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn't know? Haven't you heard what has happened there these last few days?" 19"What things?" Jesus asked. "The things about Jesus of Nazareth," they answered. "He was a prophet. His words and actions were powerful in the eyes of God and all the people. 20Our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death. And they crucified him. 21But we had hoped that he was the one who would redeem Israel. Besides all this, it's now the third day since these things happened. 22Also, some of the women in our group amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning. 23But they didn't find his body. They came back and told us they had seen a vision of angels. The angels said that Jesus was alive. 24Then some of our friends went to the tomb. They found it just as the women had said. But they didn't see him." 25Then Jesus said to them, "How foolish you are! Your hearts are so slow to believe everything the prophets said! 26Didn't the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" 27Then he began with Moses and all the Prophets. He explained to them what all the Scriptures said about himself. 28They came near the village where they were going. Jesus acted as if he was going on farther. 29But they begged him, "Stay with us. It's almost evening, and the day is nearly over." So he went in to stay with them. 30He took his place at the table with them. Then he took the bread and blessed it. He broke it and gave it to them. 31Then their eyes were opened, and they knew it was Jesus. And he disappeared from their sight. 32They said to each other, "Weren't our hearts burning inside us while he talked with us on the road? Weren't they burning while he explained the Scriptures to us?" 33They got up right away and went back to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and the others with them, gathered together. 34They were saying, "It's true! The Lord has risen! He has appeared to Simon!" 35Then the two told what had happened on the road. They told how they knew it was Jesus when he broke the bread. 36While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them. He said, "Peace be with you." 37But they were startled and afraid. They thought they were seeing a ghost. 38Jesus asked them, "Why are you upset? Why do you have doubts in your hearts? 39Look at my hands and my feet. It's really me! Touch me and see. A ghost doesn't have flesh and bones, as you see I have." 40After he said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41They were so full of joy and amazement that they still couldn't believe it. So he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" 42They gave him a piece of cooked fish. 43He took it and ate it while they watched. 44Jesus said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you. Everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must come true." 45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer. And he will rise from the dead on the third day. 47In his name, the message to repent and be forgiven of sins will be preached to all nations. It will start in Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49Listen, I am sending you what my Father promised. But stay in the city until you have been filled with power from heaven."b 50Jesus led them out as far as Bethany. He lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52Then they worshiped him and went back to Jerusalem with great joy. 53They stayed at the temple all the time, praising God.
