1The Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was coming near. 2The chief priests and scribes were looking for a way to kill Jesus, because they were afraid of the people. 3Then Satan entered Judas Iscariot. Judas was one of the Twelve. 4Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard. He talked with them about how he could hand Jesus over to them. 5They were very glad, and they agreed to give him money. 6Judas agreed. He began to watch for a chance to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was around. 7Then the day of Unleavened Bread came. On this day the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8Jesus sent Peter and John. He said, "Go and get things ready for us to eat the Passover meal." 9"Where do you want us to get it ready?" they asked. 10He answered, "When you go into the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house he goes into. 11Then say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks, "Where is the guest room? Where can I eat the Passover meal with my disciples?"' 12He will show you a large upstairs room that is already set up. Get things ready there." 13So they went and found everything just as Jesus had told them. And they got the Passover meal ready. 14When the time came, Jesus took his place at the table with his apostles. 15He said to them, "I have wanted very much to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer. 16I tell you, I won't eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." 17Then he took a cup and gave thanks. He said, "Take this and share it among yourselves. 18I tell you, from now on I won't drink wine from the vine until the kingdom of God comes."a 19Then he took the bread and gave thanks. He broke it and gave it to them. He said, "This is my body, given for you. Do this in memory of me." 20In the same way, after supper he took the cup. He said, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21But look! The hand of the man who will hand me over is with mine on the table. 22The Son of Man will go the way that has been planned. But how terrible it will be for the man who hands him over!" 23Then they began to ask each other which of them would do this. 24The disciples also started to argue. They argued about which of them was the most important. 25So Jesus said, "The kings of the Gentiles boss their people around. And those who rule over them call themselves 'friends of the people.'b 26But you must not be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest. The one who leads should be like the one who serves. 27Who is greater, the one who sits at the table, or the one who serves him? Isn't it the one at the table? But I am here among you as one who serves. 28You are the ones who have stayed with me in my times of testing. 29And I give you a kingdom, just as my Father gave one to me. 30I do this so that you can eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. And you will sit on thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel. 31Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you like wheat. 32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith won't fail. And when you have turned back, make your brothers strong." 33Peter said, "Lord, I'm ready to go with you to prison, and even to die." 34But Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will say three times that you don't know me." 35Then Jesus asked them, "I sent you out without a money bag, a travel bag, or sandals. Did you need anything?" "Nothing," they answered. 36He said to them, "But now, if you have a money bag, take it. Take a travel bag too. And if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37I tell you, this Scripture must come true in me: 'He was counted among the lawbreakers.' Because what is written about me is coming true." 38The disciples said, "Look, Lord, here are two swords." "That's enough," he answered. 39Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives as he usually did. His disciples followed him. 40When he got to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you won't fall into temptation." 41Then he went a short distance away from them, about as far as you could throw a stone. There he knelt down and prayed. 42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want." 43Then an angel from heaven came to him and made him strong.c 44He was in great pain of heart, and he prayed even harder. His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. 45Then Jesus got up from praying and went back to the disciples. He found them asleep. They were worn out from being so sad. 46"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray, so that you won't fall into temptation." 47While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd came up. The man named Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He walked up to Jesus to kiss him. 48But Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you handing over the Son of Man with a kiss?" 49The men around Jesus saw what was about to happen. They said, "Lord, should we fight with our swords?" 50One of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear. 51But Jesus said, "Stop! No more of this!" Then he touched the man's ear and healed him. 52The chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders had come for Jesus. He said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a robber? 53Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you didn't lay a hand on me. But this is your hour. It is the time when the power of darkness rules." 54Then they grabbed Jesus and led him away. They took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed far behind. 55Some people built a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together. Peter sat down with them. 56A servant girl saw him sitting there in the light of the fire. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with Jesus too." 57But Peter said it wasn't true. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. 58A little later, someone else saw him. He said, "You are one of them too." But Peter said, "Man, I am not!" 59About an hour later, another man kept saying, "This man was with him for sure, because he's from Galilee too." 60Peter answered, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Right then, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered what the Lord had told him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will say three times that you don't know me." 62And Peter went outside and cried very hard. 63The men who were guarding Jesus began to make fun of him and beat him. 64They covered his eyes and kept saying, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" 65And they said many other evil and insulting things against him. 66When morning came, the council of the elders of the people met together. Both the chief priests and the scribes were there. They led Jesus into their Sanhedrin and said,d 67"If you are the Messiah, tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you won't believe me. 68And if I ask you a question, you won't answer. 69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." 70They all asked, "So are you the Son of God?" He answered, "You say that I am." 71Then they said, "Why do we need any more witnesses? We have heard it ourselves from his own mouth."
