1After this, the Lord chose seventy-two other followers. He sent them out two by two ahead of him. They went to every town and place where he was about to go.a 2He told them, "The harvest is large, but there are only a few workers. So ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest field. 3Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4Don't take a money bag, a travel bag, or sandals. Don't stop to greet anyone on the road. 5When you go into a house, first say, 'May there be peace in this house.' 6If a person of peace lives there, your peace will rest on him. If not, your peace will come back to you. 7Stay in that same house. Eat and drink whatever they give you. For a worker has earned his pay. Don't keep moving from house to house. 8If you go into a town and the people welcome you, eat whatever they put in front of you. 9Heal the sick people there. Tell them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.' 10But if you go into a town and they don't welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11'We wipe off even the dust of your town that sticks to our feet. We do this as a warning against you. But you can be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.' 12I tell you, on that day it will be easier for Sodom than for that town. 13How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible for you, Bethsaida! Suppose the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon. Then they would have repented long ago. They would have sat in sackcloth and ashes. 14But at the judgment it will be easier for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 15And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! 16Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the One who sent me." 17The seventy-two came back full of joy. They said, "Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!" 18Jesus told them, "I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19Listen, I have given you authority to walk on snakes and scorpions. You have authority over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will hurt you. 20But don't be glad that the spirits obey you. Be glad that your names are written in heaven." 21At that time Jesus was filled with joy in the Holy Spirit. He said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from people who are wise and learned. You have shown them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what pleased you. 22My Father has given all things to me. No one knows who the Son is except the Father. And no one knows who the Father is except the Son. Others know him only if the Son chooses to show him to them." 23Then Jesus turned to his disciples. He said to them alone, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24For I tell you, many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, but they didn't see it. They wanted to hear what you hear, but they didn't hear it." 25One day an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. He asked, "Teacher, what must I do to receive eternal life?"b 26Jesus answered, "What is written in the Law? What do you read there?" 27The man answered, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind.' And, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" 28Jesus said, "You have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live." 29But the man wanted to show that he was in the right. So he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30Jesus answered with a story. "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho. Robbers attacked him. They took his clothes and beat him. Then they went away and left him almost dead. 31It happened that a priest was going down that same road. When he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32A Levite also came to that place and saw him. He too passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan who was traveling came to where the man was. When he saw him, he felt sorry for him. 34He went to him. He poured oil and wine on his wounds and wrapped them up. Then he put the man on his own animal. He brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Take care of him,' he said. 'When I come back, I will pay you for anything more you spend.'c 36Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man the robbers attacked?" 37The expert in the law answered, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus told him, "Go and do the same." 38As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, he came to a village. A woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39She had a sister named Mary. Mary sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he said. 40But Martha was busy with all the work that had to be done. She came to Jesus and said, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" 41The Lord answered, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things. 42But only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
