1Jabin king of Hazor heard about all this. So he sent messages to other kings. He sent word to Jobab king of Madon. He sent word to the kings of Shimron and Achshaph. 2He sent word to the kings in the north. They were in the mountains, in the Arabah south of Chinnereth, and in the foothills. They were also in Naphoth-dor to the west. 3He sent word to the Canaanites in the east and west. He sent word to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, and Jebusites in the hill country. He also sent word to the Hivites below Mount Hermon in the land of Mizpah. 4So these kings came out with all their armies. There were as many soldiers as grains of sand on the seashore. They had a great many horses and chariots. 5All these kings joined their forces. They camped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel. 6Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand all of them over to Israel, dead. Cut the leg tendons of their horses so they can't run. Burn up their chariots." 7So Joshua and his whole army came at them suddenly by the waters of Merom. They attacked them. 8The LORD gave them to Israel. Israel struck them down. They chased them all the way to Greater Sidon and Misrephoth-maim. They chased them east as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. They struck them down until no one was left alive. 9Joshua did to them what the LORD had told him. He cut the leg tendons of their horses. He burned up their chariots. 10At that time Joshua turned back and took Hazor. He killed its king with the sword, because in the past Hazor had been the leader of all these kingdoms. 11The Israelites killed everyone in Hazor with the sword. They destroyed them completely. Nothing that breathed was left alive. And Joshua burned Hazor itself. 12Joshua took all these kings and their cities. He killed them with the sword. He destroyed them completely. This was what Moses the LORD's servant had commanded. 13But Israel did not burn any of the cities built on their hills. Hazor was the only one Joshua burned. 14The Israelites kept for themselves all the goods and animals from these cities. But they killed all the people with the sword until they had destroyed them completely. They did not spare anyone who breathed. 15The LORD had given commands to his servant Moses. Then Moses gave the same commands to Joshua. And Joshua did them. He did not leave out anything the LORD had commanded Moses. 16So Joshua took this whole land. He took the hill country, all the Negev, and all the land of Goshen. He took the western foothills and the Arabah. He took the mountains of Israel and their foothills. 17The land went from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, to Baal-gad. Baal-gad is in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. Joshua captured all their kings. He struck them down and put them to death. 18Joshua fought against all these kings for a long time. 19Not one city made peace with the Israelites except Gibeon, where the Hivites lived. Israel took all the others in battle. 20It was the LORD who made their hearts stubborn so they would fight Israel. He did it so that they would be set apart to be destroyed. They would get no mercy. They would be wiped out, as the LORD had commanded Moses. 21At that time Joshua went out to wipe out the Anakim. He wiped them out of the hill country of Hebron, Debir, and Anab. He wiped them out of all the hill country of Judah and of Israel. Joshua destroyed them and their cities completely.a 22No Anakim were left in the land of the Israelites. Only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod were some still alive. 23So Joshua took the whole land, just as the LORD had told Moses. Joshua gave it to Israel to own. He divided it among their tribes. Then the land had rest from war.
