1As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind since he was born. 2His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned and made this man be born blind? Was it this man or his parents?" 3Jesus answered, "This man did not sin, and his parents did not sin. This happened so that God's works could be shown in him. 4While it is day, we must do the works of the one who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world." 6After he said this, Jesus spit on the ground and made some mud. He put it on the man's eyes. 7Then he told him, "Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam" (which means "Sent"). So the man went and washed. And he came back able to see. 8His neighbors and others who had seen him begging before began to ask, "Isn't this the man who used to sit and beg?" 9Some said he was. Others said, "No, he just looks like him." But the man kept saying, "I am the one." 10"Then how were your eyes opened?" they asked. 11He answered, "The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see." 12"Where is he?" they asked. "I don't know," he answered. 13They brought the man who had been blind to the Pharisees. 14Jesus had made the mud and opened the man's eyes on a Sabbath day. 15So the Pharisees also asked him how he got his sight. The man answered, "He put mud on my eyes. I washed, and now I can see." 16So some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God. He doesn't keep the Sabbath." But others said, "How can a sinner do signs like these?" So they were divided. 17So they asked the man who had been blind again, "It was your eyes he opened. What do you say about him?" "He is a prophet," the man answered. 18The Jewish leaders still didn't believe that the man had been blind and now could see. So they called for his parents.a 19They asked them, "Is this your son? Is he the one you say was born blind? Then how can he see now?" 20His parents answered, "We know he is our son. And we know he was born blind. 21But we don't know how he can see now. We don't know who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is old enough to speak for himself." 22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. The leaders had already decided something. Anyone who said Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue. 23That's why his parents said, "He is old enough. Ask him." 24So for a second time they called the man who had been blind. They said, "Give glory to God! We know this man is a sinner." 25He answered, "I don't know if he is a sinner. But I do know one thing. I was blind, but now I see!" 26"What did he do to you?" they asked. "How did he open your eyes?" 27He answered, "I already told you, and you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?" 28Then they shouted insults at him. They said, "You are his disciple! We are disciples of Moses. 29We know that God spoke to Moses. But we don't even know where this man comes from." 30"That's amazing!" the man said. "You don't know where he comes from. Yet he opened my eyes. 31We know that God doesn't listen to sinners. But he does listen to the one who worships him and does what he wants. 32No one has ever heard of anyone opening the eyes of a man who was born blind. 33If this man were not from God, he couldn't do anything like this." 34They answered, "You were born full of sin! And you are trying to teach us?" And they threw him out. 35Jesus heard that they had thrown the man out. So he found him and said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" 36"Who is he, sir?" the man answered. "Tell me so I can believe in him." 37"You have already seen him," Jesus answered. "He is the one talking with you." 38"Lord, I believe," he said. And he worshiped Jesus. 39Then Jesus said, "I have come into this world to bring judgment. I came so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind." 40Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this. They asked him, "Are we blind too?" 41"If you were blind," Jesus answered, "you would not be guilty of sin. But now you say you can see. So your guilt stays."
