1On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had been invited to the wedding too. 3When the wine ran out, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." 4"Woman, what does this have to do with you and me?" Jesus answered. "My time has not come yet."a 5His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." 6Six stone water jars were standing nearby. The Jews used them for their washing rituals. Each jar could hold 20 to 30 gallons. 7Jesus told the servants, "Fill the jars with water." So they filled them to the top. 8"Now dip some out," he said. "Take it to the man in charge of the feast." They did that, 9and the man in charge tasted the water that had become wine. He didn't know where it came from. But the servants who had dipped out the water knew. Then he called the groom over 10and said, "Everyone serves the best wine first. Then they serve the cheap wine after the guests are drunk. But you have saved the best wine until now!" 11This was the first of Jesus' signs. He did it at Cana in Galilee. In this way he showed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. 12After this, Jesus went down to Capernaum with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples. They stayed there a few days. 13When the Jewish Passover was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep, and doves. Money changers were sitting at their tables. 15So he made a whip out of cords. He drove them all out of the temple courts, along with the sheep and cattle. He dumped out the money changers' coins and turned over their tables. 16He said to the men selling doves, "Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!" 17His disciples remembered that it is written, "My deep love for your house will burn me up."b 18Because of this, the Jewish leaders asked him, "What sign can you show us? Prove you have the right to do these things."c 19Jesus answered, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up again in three days." 20The Jewish leaders answered, "It took 46 years to build this temple. And you are going to raise it up in three days?" 21But the temple Jesus was talking about was his body. 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and the words Jesus had spoken. 23Jesus was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast. While he was there, many people saw the signs he was doing. They believed in his name. 24But Jesus did not trust himself to them, because he knew all people. 25He did not need anyone to tell him about people. He knew what was in each person's heart.d
