1"I am the true vine. My Father is the gardener who cares for the vineyard. 2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit. And he trims every branch that does bear fruit. He does this so it will bear even more fruit. 3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself. It must remain in the vine. In the same way, you can't bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5I am the vine. You are the branches. If you remain in me and I remain in you, you will bear much fruit. For without me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and dries up. Branches like that are picked up. They are thrown into the fire and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want. It will be done for you. 8This brings glory to my Father, when you bear much fruit. It shows that you are my disciples. 9I have loved you just as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. 10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love. In the same way, I have obeyed my Father's commands, and I remain in his love. 11I have told you these things so that my joy will be in you. I want your joy to be complete. 12This is my command: Love one another as I have loved you. 13No one has greater love than this: to give up his life for his friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15I don't call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn't know what his master is doing. Instead, I have called you friends. That is because I have told you everything I learned from my Father. 16You did not choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask for in my name. 17This is my command to you: Love one another. 18If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. 19If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. But you don't belong to the world. I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20Remember what I told you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they were cruel to me, they will be cruel to you too. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours too.a 21But they will treat you this way because of my name, since they don't know the One who sent me. 22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. 23Anyone who hates me also hates my Father. 24I did works among them that no one else ever did. If I had not, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these works. And they have hated both me and my Father. 25But this happened to make what is written in their Law come true: 'They hated me for no reason.' 26I will send the Helper to you from the Father. He is the Spirit of truth who comes out from the Father. When he comes, he will tell about me. 27And you also must tell about me, because you have been with me from the beginning.
