1It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that his hour had come. It was time for him to leave this world and go back to the Father. He had loved his own people who were in the world. Now he loved them to the very end. 2The evening meal was going on. The devil had already put the idea into the heart of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. It was the idea to betray Jesus. 3Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands. He knew that he had come from God and was going back to God. 4So he got up from the meal and took off his outer clothes. He wrapped a towel around his waist. 5Then he poured water into a bowl. He began to wash his disciples' feet. He dried them with the towel he had wrapped around himself. 6He came to Simon Peter. Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" 7Jesus answered, "You don't understand now what I am doing. But later you will understand." 8"No," Peter said. "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." 9"Then, Lord," Simon Peter answered, "don't wash only my feet. Wash my hands and my head too!" 10Jesus told him, "A person who has already had a bath only needs to wash his feet. Then his whole body is clean. And you are clean, but not all of you." 11Jesus knew who was going to betray him. That is why he said not all of them were clean. 12Jesus finished washing their feet. Then he put his outer clothes back on and reclined at the table again. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. 13"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord.' You are right, because that is what I am. 14So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, then you also should wash each other's feet. 15I have given you an example. You should do as I have done for you. 16I tell you the truth. No servant is greater than his master. And no messenger is greater than the one who sent him. 17If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. 18I am not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this happens to make the Scripture come true: 'The one who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.' 19I am telling you now, before it happens. Then when it does happen, you will believe that I am He. 20I tell you the truth. Anyone who welcomes the one I send welcomes me. And anyone who welcomes me welcomes the One who sent me." 21After Jesus said this, he was troubled in his spirit. He said plainly, "I tell you the truth. One of you is going to betray me." 22The disciples looked at each other. They had no idea which one of them he meant. 23One of his disciples was reclining next to him. He was the disciple whom Jesus loved. 24Simon Peter made a sign to this disciple. He wanted him to ask Jesus which one he meant. 25So that disciple leaned back against Jesus. He asked him, "Lord, who is it?" 26Jesus answered, "It is the one I will give this piece of bread to after I dip it in the dish." Then he dipped the piece of bread. He gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. 27As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you are about to do, do it quickly." 28But no one at the table understood why Jesus said this to him. 29Judas was in charge of the money bag. So some of them thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast. Or they thought he was telling him to give something to the poor. 30As soon as Judas took the bread, he went out. And it was night. 31After Judas left, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified. And God is glorified in him. 32If God is glorified in the Son, God will also glorify the Son in himself. And he will glorify him right away. 33My little children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me. I told the Jews, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.' Now I say the same thing to you. 34I give you a new command: Love one another. You must love one another just as I have loved you. 35If you love one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples." 36Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going, you can't follow me now. But you will follow me later." 37Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will give up my life for you." 38Jesus answered, "Will you really give up your life for me? I tell you the truth. Before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you don't know me.
