1Then Eliphaz from Teman answered: 2"If someone tries to say a word to you, will it wear you out?
But who can keep from speaking?
3You have taught many people.
You have made weak hands strong.
4Your words have held up those who tripped.
You have made weak knees strong.
5But now trouble has come to you, and you are worn out.
It hits you, and you are upset.
6Shouldn't your fear of God give you trust?
Shouldn't your honest life give you hope?
7Think about it, please.
Who that was innocent ever perished?
Where were honest people ever wiped out?
8Here is what I have seen.
Those who plow evil and plant trouble
get a harvest of the same.
9They die at the breath of God.
They are burned up by the blast of his anger.
10The lion may roar, and the fierce lion may growl.
But the teeth of the young lions are broken.
11The old lion dies because he has nothing to hunt.
And the cubs of the mother lion are scattered.
12Now a word came to me in secret.
My ears heard a soft whisper of it.
13It came in upsetting visions in the night,
when people are in deep sleep.
14Fear and trembling came over me.
They made all my bones shake.
15Then a spirit slid past my face.
The hair on my body stood up.
16It stood still, but I could not tell what it looked like.
A shape stood in front of my eyes.
Then I heard a voice whisper:
17'Can a human be more right than God?
Can a man be more pure than the one who made him?
18If God does not trust his servants,
and if he blames his angels for their mistakes,
19how much less will he trust those who live in houses of clay!
They stand on dust.
They can be crushed like a moth!
20Between morning and evening they are broken to pieces.
No one notices, and they are gone forever.
21Aren't the ropes of their tents pulled up?
So they die without wisdom.'
