1On another day the sons of God came to stand before the LORD. Satan also came with them to stand before him. 2The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered, "From roaming around the earth. I've been walking back and forth on it." 3Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you noticed my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him. He is without blame and lives an honest life. He fears God and stays away from evil. He still holds on to his faithfulness. He does, even though you got me to act against him. You got me to ruin him for no reason." 4"Skin for skin!" Satan answered. "A man will give up all he has to save his life. 5But reach out your hand and strike his flesh and bones. Then he will surely curse you to your face." 6"All right," the LORD said to Satan. "He is in your power. But you must spare his life." 7So Satan went out from the LORD's presence. He struck Job with terrible sores. They covered him from the bottoms of his feet to the top of his head. 8Job sat among the ashes. He took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it. 9Then Job's wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your faithfulness? Curse God and die!" 10Job answered her, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Should we take only good things from God and not trouble?" In all this, Job did not sin by what he said. 11Job had three friends. They were Eliphaz from Teman, Bildad from Shuah, and Zophar from Naamah. They heard about all the trouble that had come on Job. So each of them left his home. They met together and went to show Job they cared and to comfort him. 12They saw him from far away. They could hardly tell it was Job. They began to cry out loud. Each man tore his robe. They threw dust into the air and onto their heads. 13Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him. They could see how great his suffering was.
