1The LORD gave this message to Jeremiah the prophet about the Philistines. It came before Pharaoh attacked Gaza. 2This is what the LORD says:
"Look, waters are rising in the north.
They are becoming a flooding river.
They will flood the land and everything in it,
the cities and the people who live there.
The people will cry out.
All who live in the land will wail.
3They will hear the pounding hooves of war horses.
They will hear the rumbling chariots and their rattling wheels.
Fathers will not turn back for their sons.
Their hands will hang limp.
4For the day has come to destroy all the Philistines.
It has come to cut off every helper left for Tyre and Sidon.
Yes, the LORD is about to destroy the Philistines,
those left from the coasts of Caphtor.
5The people of Gaza will shave their heads to show their sorrow.
Ashkelon will be silenced.
You who are left in their valley,
how long will you cut yourselves?
6'Oh, sword of the LORD,
how long until you rest?
Go back into your sheath.
Stop and be still!'
7But how can it rest when the LORD has given it orders?
He has sent it against Ashkelon
and against the seacoast."
