1Jeremiah was still locked up in the courtyard of the guard. Then the LORD gave him a message a second time. 2"This is what the LORD says. He made the earth. The LORD formed it and set it in place. The LORD is his name. 3Call to me, and I will answer you. I will show you great and hidden things that you do not know. 4For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the houses of this city and the palaces of the kings of Judah. They have been torn down to defend against the dirt ramps and the sword. 5The Chaldeans are coming to fight. They will fill those places with the dead bodies of men. I will strike them down in my anger and fury. I have hidden my face from this city because of all its evil. 6But I will bring health and healing to it. I will heal its people. I will show them great peace and truth. 7I will bring Judah and Israel back from captivity. I will build them up again as they were before. 8I will wash them clean from all the sin they have done against me. I will forgive all the ways they sinned and rebelled against me. 9Then this city will bring me fame, joy, praise, and glory in front of all the nations of the earth. They will hear about all the good I do for it. They will shake with awe because of all the good things and the wealth I give it. 10This is what the LORD says: You say this place is a wasteland with no people or animals. The towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem are empty. No people or animals live there. But in those places you will hear again 11the sounds of joy and gladness. You will hear the voices of the bride and groom. You will hear people bringing thank offerings to the house of the LORD. They will say, 'Give thanks to the LORD of Hosts, for the LORD is good. His faithful love lasts forever.' For I will bring the land back from captivity as it was before, says the LORD. 12This is what the LORD of Hosts says: This place is empty now, with no people or animals. But in it and in all its towns there will be pastures again. Shepherds will rest their flocks there. 13This will happen in the towns of the hill country, the foothills, and the Negev. It will happen in the land of Benjamin and the towns around Jerusalem, and in the towns of Judah. Flocks will again pass under the hands of the one who counts them, says the LORD. 14Look, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will keep the kind promise I made. I made it to the people of Israel and the people of Judah. 15In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout for David. He will do what is just and right in the land. 16In those days Judah will be saved. Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name it will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness. 17For this is what the LORD says: David will always have a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel. 18And the priests who are Levites will always have a man to stand before me. He will offer burnt offerings, burn grain offerings, and bring sacrifices." 19The LORD gave this message to Jeremiah. 20"This is what the LORD says: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer come at their set times, 21then my covenant with my servant David can also be broken. Then David would not have a son to rule on his throne. And my covenant with the Levites who are priests and serve me could be broken too. 22No one can count the stars of the sky. No one can measure the sand on the seashore. In the same way, I will make the descendants of my servant David very many. I will do the same for the Levites who serve me." 23The LORD gave another message to Jeremiah. 24"Have you noticed what these people are saying? They say, 'The LORD has rejected the two families he had chosen.' So they look down on my people. They no longer think of them as a nation. 25This is what the LORD says: I made my covenant with the day and the night. I set the fixed laws of heaven and earth. If I had not done that, 26then I would also reject the descendants of Jacob and of my servant David. I would not choose rulers from David's family to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But I will bring them back from captivity. I will show them mercy."
