1This is the message that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: 2"This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Write down in a book all the words I have spoken to you. 3For look, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will bring my people Israel and Judah back from being captives, says the LORD. I will bring them back to the land I gave to their fathers. They will own it again.'" 4These are the words the LORD spoke about Israel and Judah. 5Yes, this is what the LORD says:
"A cry of panic is heard.
It is a cry of terror, not of peace.
6Ask now and see.
Can a man give birth to a baby?
Then why do I see every man
with his hands on his belly
like a woman giving birth?
Why has every face turned pale?
7How terrible that day will be!
No other day will be like it!
It is a time of trouble for Jacob,
but he will be saved out of it.
8On that day, says the LORD of Hosts,
I will break the yoke off their necks.
I will tear off their chains.
Strangers will no longer make them slaves.
9Instead, they will serve the LORD their God.
They will serve David their king,
whom I will raise up for them.
10As for you, Jacob my servant, do not be afraid, says the LORD.
Do not lose heart, Israel.
For I will surely save you from a land far away.
I will save your children from the land where they are captives.
Jacob will come back and have peace and rest.
No one will make him afraid.
11For I am with you to save you, says the LORD.
I will completely destroy all the nations
where I have scattered you.
But I will not completely destroy you.
I will correct you fairly.
I will not let you go without punishment."
12For this is what the LORD says:
"Your injury cannot be cured.
Your wound is very bad.
13There is no one to stand up for you.
There is no medicine for your sores.
You will not get well.
14All your lovers have forgotten you.
They don't look for you anymore.
I have struck you as an enemy would.
I have punished you like someone cruel.
This is because your guilt is great
and your sins are many.
15Why do you cry out about your wound?
Your pain has no cure!
I have done these things to you
because your guilt is great
and your sins are many.
16But all who eat you up will be eaten up.
All your enemies, every one of them,
will be taken away as captives.
Those who robbed you will be robbed.
All who attacked you will be attacked.
17But I will make you healthy again.
I will heal your wounds, says the LORD.
For they call you an outcast.
They say, 'This is Zion, and no one cares about her.'"
18This is what the LORD says:
"I will make things good again for the tents of Jacob.
I will have mercy on his homes.
The city will be rebuilt on its own ruins.
The palace will stand in its proper place.
19Songs of thanks will come from them.
There will be sounds of celebrating.
I will make them many, and they will not become few.
I will give them honor, and they will not be looked down on.
20Their children will be as they were long ago.
Their community will be made strong before me.
And I will punish all who mistreat them.
21Their leader will be one of their own.
Their ruler will come from among them.
I will bring him close, and he will come near to me.
For who would dare to come near me on his own?" says the LORD.
22"And you will be my people,
and I will be your God."
23Look, the storm of the LORD has burst out in fury.
A whirlwind is swirling down
on the heads of the wicked.
24The fierce anger of the LORD will not turn back
until he has done all that his heart has planned.
In the days to come
you will understand this.
