1That same year, near the start of the rule of King Zedekiah of Judah, a prophet spoke to me. It was in the fifth month of the fourth year. The prophet was Hananiah son of Azzur, from Gibeon. He spoke to me in the house of the LORD in front of the priests and all the people. He said, 2"This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3Within two years I will bring back to this place all the things from the house of the LORD. Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took them from here and carried them to Babylon. 4I will also bring back to this place Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah. And I will bring back all the captives from Judah who went to Babylon,' says the LORD. 'For I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.'" 5Then Jeremiah the prophet answered Hananiah the prophet. He spoke in front of the priests and all the people standing in the house of the LORD. 6Jeremiah said, "Amen! May the LORD do so! May the LORD make the words you prophesied come true. May he bring back the things from his house and all the captives from Babylon to this place. 7But listen now to this message. I am speaking it to you and to all the people. 8Long ago there were prophets who came before you and me. They prophesied war, disaster, and plague against many lands and great kingdoms. 9But a prophet may prophesy peace. Only when his words come true will people know that the LORD really sent him." 10Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it. 11Hananiah spoke in front of all the people. He said, "This is what the LORD says: 'In the same way, within two years I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. I will break it off the necks of all the nations.'" When he heard this, Jeremiah the prophet went on his way. 12Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke off Jeremiah's neck. A short time later, the LORD gave Jeremiah this message: 13"Go and tell Hananiah that this is what the LORD says: 'You have broken a yoke made of wood. But in its place you have made a yoke of iron.' 14For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: 'I have put a yoke of iron on the necks of all these nations. They must serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they will serve him. I have even put the wild animals under his control.'" 15Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, "Listen, Hananiah! The LORD did not send you. But you have made these people trust in a lie. 16So this is what the LORD says: 'I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. You will die this year, because you have told people to turn against the LORD.'" 17And in the seventh month of that same year, Hananiah the prophet died.
