1This is what the LORD says:
"Where is the paper that shows I divorced your mother
and sent her away?
Or to which of the people I owe did I sell you?
Look, you were sold because of your sins.
Your mother was sent away because of your wrongs. 2When I came, why was no one there?
When I called, why did no one answer?
Is my hand too short to buy you back?
Do I not have the strength to rescue you?
Look, when I speak sharply, the sea dries up.
I turn the rivers into a desert.
The fish rot because there is no water.
They die of thirst. 3I dress the skies in black.
I cover them with sackcloth." 4The Lord GOD has given me a tongue that is taught by him.
Now I know how to help tired people with a word.
He wakes me up morning after morning.
He wakes up my ear to listen like a student. 5The Lord GOD has opened my ears.
I have not turned against him.
I have not turned away. 6I let people beat my back.
I let them pull out the hair of my beard.
I did not hide my face
when they mocked me and spit on me. 7The Lord GOD helps me,
so I have not been put to shame.
So I have set my face like hard stone.
I know I will not be put to shame. 8The one who proves I am right is near.
Who dares to bring charges against me?
Let us face each other!
Who has a case against me?
Let him come to me! 9The Lord GOD helps me.
Who can say I am guilty?
Look, they will all wear out like old clothes.
The moths will eat them up. 10Who among you fears the LORD
and obeys the voice of his Servant?
Who among you walks in darkness and has no light?
Let him trust in the name of the LORD.
Let him lean on his God. 11But look, all of you who light a fire,
who surround yourselves with burning torches.
Go ahead and walk in the light of your own fire,
in the light of the torches you have lit!
This is what you will get from my hand:
you will lie down in a place of pain.
