1Sargon king of Assyria sent his chief commander to Ashdod. The commander attacked Ashdod and captured it. Before the year that this happened, 2the LORD had already spoken through Isaiah son of Amoz. He said, "Go, take the sackcloth off your waist. Take the sandals off your feet." Isaiah did this. He walked around naked and barefoot. 3Then the LORD said, "My servant Isaiah has gone naked and barefoot for three years. It is a sign and a warning against Egypt and Cush. 4In the same way, the king of Assyria will lead away the captives from Egypt and the exiles from Cush. Young and old will go naked and barefoot. Their bottoms will be bare, to Egypt's shame. 5Some people put their hope in Cush and bragged about Egypt. They will be afraid and ashamed. 6On that day the people who live on this coast will say, 'Look what has happened to the ones we hoped in! We ran to them for help. We wanted them to save us from the king of Assyria! So how can we escape?'"
