1Then a shoot will grow out of the stump of Jesse.
A Branch from his roots will bear fruit. 2The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him.
He is the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of good advice and strength,
the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. 3He will find joy in the fear of the LORD.
He will not judge by what his eyes see.
He will not decide by what his ears hear. 4But he will judge the poor with what is right.
He will decide fairly for the humble people of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth.
He will kill the wicked with the breath of his lips. 5What is right will be like the belt around his hips.
Faithfulness will be like the sash around his waist. 6The wolf will live with the lamb.
The leopard will lie down with the young goat.
The calf, the young lion, and the fat calf will be together.
And a little child will lead them. 7The cow will eat grass with the bear.
Their young will lie down together.
The lion will eat straw like the ox. 8The baby will play near the cobra's hole.
The little child will put a hand into the viper's nest. 9They will not hurt or destroy
on all my holy mountain.
For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD,
as the sea is full of water. 10On that day the Root of Jesse
will stand as a banner for the peoples.
The nations will come looking for him.
The place where he rests will be glorious. 11On that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time.
He will bring back his people who are left.
He will bring them from Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, and Cush.
He will bring them from Elam, Shinar, and Hamath,
and from the islands of the sea. 12He will raise a banner for the nations.
He will gather the people of Israel who were sent away.
He will bring together the scattered people of Judah
from the four corners of the earth. 13Then Ephraim will no longer be jealous.
The enemies of Judah will be cut off.
Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah.
Judah will not be hostile to Ephraim. 14They will swoop down on the hills of the Philistines to the west.
Together they will rob the people of the east.
They will take control of Edom and Moab.
The Ammonites will obey them. 15The LORD will completely destroy
the gulf of the Sea of Egypt.
He will wave his hand over the Euphrates River
with a burning wind.
He will split it into seven streams,
so people can cross it in dry sandals. 16There will be a highway for his people who are left,
those who remain in Assyria.
It will be like the road for Israel
when they came up out of the land of Egypt.
