1Come, let us return to the LORD.
He has torn us to pieces,
but he will heal us.
He has wounded us,
but he will bandage our wounds.
2After two days he will bring us back to life.
On the third day he will raise us up,
so that we may live with him.
3So let us know the LORD.
Let us press on to know him.
As surely as the sun rises,
he will appear.
He will come to us like the rain,
like the spring showers that water the earth.
4What should I do with you, Ephraim?
What should I do with you, Judah?
Your loyalty is like a morning mist,
like the early dew that goes away.
5That is why I cut them down by the prophets.
I killed them by the words of my mouth.
My judgments flash out like lightning.
6For I want mercy, not sacrifice.
I want you to know God more than I want burnt offerings.
7But like Adam, they have broken the covenant.
There they were unfaithful to me.
8Gilead is a city of evil people.
It is marked with bloody footprints.
9Robbers hide and wait to attack.
A band of priests is just like them.
They murder people on the road to Shechem.
They surely have done terrible crimes.
10I have seen a horrible thing in the house of Israel.
Ephraim acts like a prostitute there,
and Israel is made unclean.
11And for you, Judah, a harvest is set,
when I bring my people back from captivity.
