1This is the word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri. It came when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were kings of Judah. It was also when Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel. 2When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, he told him, "Go and marry a prostitute. Have children of adultery. For this land is openly acting like a prostitute. It has turned away from the LORD." 3So Hosea went and married Gomer daughter of Diblaim. She became pregnant and had a son for him. 4Then the LORD said to Hosea, "Name him Jezreel. For soon I will make the house of Jehu pay for the blood they shed at Jezreel. And I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel. 5On that day I will break Israel's bow in the Valley of Jezreel." 6Gomer became pregnant again and had a daughter. The LORD said to Hosea, "Name her Lo-ruhamah. For I will no longer show mercy to the house of Israel. I will not forgive them at all.a 7But I will show mercy to the house of Judah, and I will save them. I will not save them by bow or sword or war, or by horses and horsemen. I will save them by the LORD their God." 8After Gomer stopped nursing Lo-ruhamah, she became pregnant and had a son. 9Then the LORD said, "Name him Lo-ammi. For you are not my people, and I am not your God.b 10Yet the number of the Israelites will be like the sand by the sea. No one can measure it or count it. In the very place where they were told, 'You are not my people,' they will be called 'children of the living God.' 11Then the people of Judah and the people of Israel will be gathered together. They will choose one leader for themselves. And they will go up out of the land. For the day of Jezreel will be great.
