HebrewsChapter 8

1Here is the main point of what we are saying. We do have this kind of high priest. He sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven. 2He serves in the holy place, in the true tabernacle. The Lord set up this tabernacle, not a man. 3Every high priest is chosen to offer gifts and sacrifices. So this high priest also needed to have something to offer. 4If he were on earth, he would not be a priest. There are already priests here who offer the gifts the law asks for. 5The place where they serve is only a copy and a shadow of what is in heaven. That's why God warned Moses when Moses was about to build the tabernacle. God said, "Be sure to make everything like the pattern I showed you on the mountain." 6But now Jesus has been given a much better work to do as priest. In the same way, the covenant he brings between God and people is better. It is built on better promises. 7If nothing had been wrong with the first covenant, no one would have looked for a second one. 8But God found fault with the people. He said, "Look, the days are coming, says the Lord. I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and the people of Judah. 9It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors. That was when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt. They did not stay true to my covenant. So I turned away from them, says the Lord. 10This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds. I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 11No longer will people teach their neighbors or their brothers, saying, 'Know the Lord.' That's because they will all know me, from the least important to the most important. 12I will forgive their wrongs. And I will never remember their sins again." 13When God talks about a new covenant, he makes the first one old and out of date. And what is out of date and growing old will soon disappear.
