1It was the second year that Darius was king. On the first day of the sixth month, the LORD gave a message through Haggai the prophet. It was for Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah. It was also for Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. The message said 2that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: "These people say, 'It is not yet time to rebuild the house of the LORD.'" 3Then the LORD gave this message through Haggai the prophet: 4"Is it time for you to live in your fine houses with wooden walls? Is it time while this house lies in ruins?" 5Now this is what the LORD of Hosts says: "Think carefully about how you are living. 6You have planted a lot, but you have harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough. You drink, but you are still thirsty. You put on clothes, but you are never warm. You earn money, but it is like putting it in a bag with holes." 7This is what the LORD of Hosts says: "Think carefully about how you are living. 8Go up into the hills and bring down wood. Build the house. Then I will be pleased with it, and I will be honored," says the LORD. 9"You hoped for a lot, but look, you got little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?" says the LORD of Hosts. "Because my house is still in ruins. Yet each of you is busy with your own house. 10So because of you, the sky has held back its dew. The earth has held back its crops. 11I have called for a drought on the fields and on the mountains. It is on the grain, the new wine, and the olive oil. It is on everything the ground grows. It is on people and animals. It is on all the work of your hands." 12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God. So did all the rest of the people. They obeyed the words of Haggai the prophet, because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD. 13Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, gave the people the LORD's message: "I am with you," says the LORD. 14So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah. He stirred up the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. He also stirred up the spirit of all the rest of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the LORD of Hosts, their God. 15This was on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year that Darius was king.
