1This is a prayer of Habakkuk the prophet. It is set to shigionoth.a 2LORD, I have heard the news about you.
LORD, I am in awe of what you have done.
Do those things again in our days.
Make them known in our time.
When you are angry, remember to show mercy! 3God came from Teman.
The Holy One came from Mount Paran.
Selah
His glory covered the heavens.
The earth was full of his praise. 4His brightness was like the sunlight.
Rays of light flashed from his hand.
That is where his power is hidden. 5Sickness went ahead of him.
Fever followed close behind him. 6He stood and measured the earth.
He looked, and the nations jumped in fear.
The ancient mountains crumbled.
The hills that had always been there fell down.
His ways last forever. 7I saw the tents of Cushan in trouble.
The tent curtains of Midian were shaking. 8LORD, were you angry at the rivers?
Was your anger against the streams?
Were you furious at the sea?
You rode on your horses.
You rode on your chariots that bring victory. 9You pulled out your bow.
You called for many arrows.
Selah
You split the earth with rivers. 10The mountains saw you and shook.
Rushing water swept by.
The deep sea roared.
It lifted its waves high like hands. 11The sun and moon stood still in the sky.
Your arrows flashed as they flew.
Your spear shined brightly. 12You marched across the earth in anger.
You stomped on the nations in your fury, like grain on a threshing floor. 13You went out to save your people.
You came to save your anointed one.
You crushed the head of the house of the wicked.
You stripped him bare from head to toe.
Selah 14With his own spear you pierced his head.
His warriors rushed out to scatter us.
They were gloating, as if ready to eat up the weak in secret. 15You stomped on the sea with your horses.
You stirred up the great waters. 16I heard, and my insides shook.
My lips trembled at the sound.
My bones began to rot.
My legs shook where I stood.
But I must wait quietly for the day of trouble.
It will come to the people who attack us. 17The fig tree may not bloom.
There may be no grapes on the vines.
The olive crop may fail.
The fields may grow no food.
The sheep may be gone from the pen.
There may be no cattle in the barns. 18But I will celebrate in the LORD!
I will be joyful in God, who saves me! 19The Lord GOD is my strength.
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer.
He lets me walk on the high places!
For the choir director. To be played on stringed instruments.
