1So Israel set out with all he had. He came to Beersheba. There he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. 2That night God spoke to Israel in a vision. He said, "Jacob, Jacob!" Jacob answered, "Here I am." 3God said, "I am God, the God of your father. Don't be afraid to go down to Egypt. I will make you into a great nation there. 4I will go down to Egypt with you. And I will surely bring you back again. Joseph's own hands will close your eyes."a 5Then Jacob left Beersheba. The sons of Israel carried their father Jacob in the wagons Pharaoh had sent for him. They took their children and wives too. 6They also took their animals and the things they had gotten in the land of Canaan. Jacob and all his family went to Egypt. 7Jacob took his sons and grandsons with him to Egypt. He took his daughters and granddaughters too. He took all his family. 8These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt. This means Jacob and his family. Reuben was Jacob's oldest son. 9The sons of Reuben were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 10The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, and Zohar. There was also Shaul, whose mother was from Canaan. 11The sons of Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 12The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah. But Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 13The sons of Issachar were Tola, Puvah, Job, and Shimron. 14The sons of Zebulun were Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. 15These were the sons Leah had with Jacob in Paddan-aram. She also had his daughter Dinah. In all, there were 33 sons and daughters. 16The sons of Gad were Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. 17The children of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah. Their sister was Serah. The sons of Beriah were Heber and Malchiel. 18These were the sons Zilpah had with Jacob. Laban had given Zilpah to his daughter Leah. There were 16 in all. 19The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin. 20Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph in the land of Egypt. Their mother was Asenath. She was the daughter of Potiphera, the priest of On. 21The sons of Benjamin were Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. 22These were the sons Rachel had with Jacob. There were 14 in all. 23The son of Dan was Hushim. 24The sons of Naphtali were Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. 25These were the sons Bilhah had with Jacob. Laban had given Bilhah to his daughter Rachel. There were seven in all. 26All of Jacob's people who came to Egypt were 66 in number. These were his own children and grandchildren. This count does not include the wives of Jacob's sons. 27Joseph also had two sons born in Egypt. Counting them, Jacob's family that went to Egypt was 70 in all. 28Jacob had sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen. Then Jacob's family came into the land of Goshen. 29Joseph got his chariot ready. He went to Goshen to meet his father Israel. When Joseph came to him, he hugged his father and wept for a long time. 30Then Israel said to Joseph, "Now I can die at last. I have seen your face. I know you are still alive!" 31Joseph said to his brothers and his father's family, "I will go up and tell Pharaoh this: 'My brothers and my father's family have come to me from the land of Canaan. 32The men are shepherds. They raise animals. They have brought their flocks and herds and everything they own.' 33When Pharaoh calls for you, he may ask, 'What kind of work do you do?' 34Then you should say, 'Your servants have raised animals since we were young. We did, and our fathers did too.' Then he will let you live in the land of Goshen. This is because Egyptians hate all shepherds."
