1Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he answered. 2God said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love. Go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains. I will show you which one." 3So Abraham got up early the next morning. He saddled his donkey. He took two of his servants and his son Isaac with him. He cut the wood for a burnt offering. Then he set out for the place God had told him about. 4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away. 5Abraham said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship. Then we will come back to you." 6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on his son Isaac. He himself carried the fire and the knife. And the two of them walked on together. 7Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, "My father!" "Here I am, my son," he answered. Isaac said, "Here are the fire and the wood. But where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" 8Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them walked on together. 9They came to the place God had told him about. Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood on it. He tied up his son Isaac. He laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. 11But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, "Abraham, Abraham!" "Here I am," he answered. 12"Don't lay a hand on the boy," the angel said. "Don't do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not held back your only son from me." 13Abraham looked up. Behind him he saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush. So he went and took the ram. He offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 14Abraham named that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day people say, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided." 15The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time. 16He said, "I swear by myself, says the LORD, that because you have done this and have not held back your only son, 17I will surely bless you. I will make your descendants as many as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take over the gates of their enemies. 18And through your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed. This is because you have obeyed me." 19Then Abraham went back to his servants. They got up and set out together for Beersheba. And Abraham lived in Beersheba. 20Some time later, Abraham was told, "Milcah has also had sons with your brother Nahor. 21Uz is the firstborn, then his brother Buz, then Kemuel, the father of Aram, 22then Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel." 23Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milcah had these eight sons with Abraham's brother Nahor. 24Nahor also had a concubine named Reumah. She had Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
