1So Abram went up from Egypt into the Negev. He took his wife and everything he owned. And Lot went with him. 2Abram had become very rich. He had many animals and much silver and gold. 3From the Negev he traveled from place to place toward Bethel. He came to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been before. 4That was where he had built the altar. And there Abram called on the name of the LORD. 5Lot was traveling with Abram. He also had flocks, herds, and tents. 6But the land could not support both of them living together. That was because they had so much that they could not stay together. 7And there was fighting between Abram's herdsmen and Lot's herdsmen. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were also living in the land. 8So Abram said to Lot, "Please let's not fight with each other. Let's not have our herdsmen fight either. After all, we are family. 9Isn't the whole land in front of you? Let's go our separate ways. If you go left, I'll go right. If you go right, I'll go left." 10Lot looked around. He saw that the whole plain of the Jordan River had plenty of water, all the way to Zoar. It was like the garden of the LORD. It was like the land of Egypt. This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. 11So Lot chose the whole plain of the Jordan for himself. He set out toward the east. And Abram and Lot went their separate ways. 12Abram lived in the land of Canaan. But Lot settled among the cities of the plain. He set up his tent near Sodom. 13Now the men of Sodom were wicked. They were sinning greatly against the LORD. 14After Lot left, the LORD said to Abram, "Look up from where you are standing. Look north and south. Look east and west. 15For I will give you all the land you see. I will give it to you and your offspring forever. 16I will make your offspring as many as the dust of the earth. If anyone could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted. 17Get up and walk through the land. Walk through its length and width, because I will give it to you." 18So Abram moved his tent. He went to live near the oak trees of Mamre at Hebron. There he built an altar to the LORD.
