1This is the story of Noah's sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth. They had sons of their own after the flood. 2The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. 3The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. 4The sons of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittites, and the Rodanites. 5From these came the peoples who lived along the seacoasts. They spread out into their own lands. Each had its own language. They lived by clans within their nations. 6The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.a 7The sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan. 8Cush was the father of Nimrod. Nimrod began to be a mighty man on the earth. 9He was a mighty hunter before the LORD. That is why people say, "He is like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD." 10His kingdom began with Babylon, Erech, Accad, and Calneh. These were in the land of Shinar. 11From that land he went out into Assyria. There he built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, 12and Resen. Resen is between Nineveh and the great city of Calah. 13Mizraim was the father of the Ludites, the Anamites, the Lehabites, the Naphtuhites, 14the Pathrusites, the Casluhites, and the Caphtorites. The Philistines came from the Casluhites. 15Canaan was the father of Sidon, his firstborn son. He was also the father of the Hittites, 16the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, 17the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, 18the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Later the clans of Canaan spread out. 19The land of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar, all the way to Gaza. Then it went toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, all the way to Lasha. 20These are the sons of Ham. They are listed by their clans, languages, lands, and nations. 21Sons were also born to Shem. Shem was the older brother of Japheth. Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber. 22The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. 23The sons of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 24Arphaxad was the father of Shelah. Shelah was the father of Eber. 25Eber had two sons. One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided. His brother was named Joktan.b 26Joktan was the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All of these were sons of Joktan. 30The land where they lived reached from Mesha to Sephar, in the hill country to the east. 31These are the sons of Shem. They are listed by their clans, languages, lands, and nations. 32All these are the clans of Noah's sons. They are listed by their family lines and nations. From them the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.
