1These are the people of the province who came back from exile. Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried them away to Babylon as captives. Now they came back to Jerusalem and Judah. Each one went to his own town. 2They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah. Here is the count of the men of Israel: 3the family of Parosh, 2,172; 4the family of Shephatiah, 372; 5the family of Arah, 775; 6the family of Pahath-moab (through Jeshua and Joab), 2,812; 7the family of Elam, 1,254; 8the family of Zattu, 945; 9the family of Zaccai, 760; 10the family of Bani, 642; 11the family of Bebai, 623; 12the family of Azgad, 1,222; 13the family of Adonikam, 666; 14the family of Bigvai, 2,056; 15the family of Adin, 454; 16the family of Ater (through Hezekiah), 98; 17the family of Bezai, 323; 18the family of Jorah, 112; 19the family of Hashum, 223; 20the family of Gibbar, 95; 21the men of Bethlehem, 123; 22the men of Netophah, 56; 23the men of Anathoth, 128; 24the family of Azmaveth, 42; 25the men of Kiriath-jearim, Chephirah, and Beeroth, 743; 26the men of Ramah and Geba, 621; 27the men of Michmash, 122; 28the men of Bethel and Ai, 223; 29the family of Nebo, 52; 30the family of Magbish, 156; 31the family of the other Elam, 1,254; 32the family of Harim, 320; 33the men of Lod, Hadid, and Ono, 725; 34the men of Jericho, 345; 35and the family of Senaah, 3,630. 36The priests: the family of Jedaiah (through the family of Jeshua), 973; 37the family of Immer, 1,052; 38the family of Pashhur, 1,247; 39and the family of Harim, 1,017. 40The Levites: the family of Jeshua and Kadmiel (through Hodaviah), 74. 41The singers: the family of Asaph, 128. 42The gatekeepers: the families of Shallum, Ater, Talmon, Akkub, Hatita, and Shobai. There were 139 in all. 43The temple servants: the families of Ziha, Hasupha, Tabbaoth, 44Keros, Siaha, Padon, 45Lebanah, Hagabah, Akkub, 46Hagab, Shalmai, Hanan, 47Giddel, Gahar, Reaiah, 48Rezin, Nekoda, Gazzam, 49Uzza, Paseah, Besai, 50Asnah, Meunim, Nephusim, 51Bakbuk, Hakupha, Harhur, 52Bazluth, Mehida, Harsha, 53Barkos, Sisera, Temah, 54Neziah, and Hatipha. 55The families of Solomon's servants: the families of Sotai, Hassophereth, Peruda, 56Jaala, Darkon, Giddel, 57Shephatiah, Hattil, Pochereth-hazzebaim, and Ami. 58The temple servants and the families of Solomon's servants came to 392 in all. 59Some people came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer. But they could not prove that their families came from Israel. Here they are: 60the families of Delaiah, Tobiah, and Nekoda. There were 652 in all. 61Some came from among the priests: the families of Hobaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai. Barzillai had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite. He was called by that family's name. 62These men looked for their family records. But they could not find them. So they were not allowed to serve as priests. They were treated as unclean. 63The governor told them not to eat the most holy food. They had to wait until there was a priest who could ask God by using the Urim and Thummim. 64The whole group added up to 42,360. 65This did not count their 7,337 male and female servants. There were also 200 men and women singers. 66They had 736 horses, 245 mules, 67435 camels, and 6,720 donkeys. 68They came to the house of the LORD in Jerusalem. Then some of the family leaders gave freewill offerings. The gifts were to build the house of God again on the same spot. 69Each gave as much as he could to pay for the work. They gave 61,000 gold coins and about 3 tons of silver. They also gave 100 robes for the priests.a 70So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants settled in their own towns. Some of the other people did too. All the rest of the Israelites settled in their towns.
