1"Now sing a sad song for the princes of Israel. 2Say:
'What was your mother? A lioness among the lions!
She lay down among the young lions.
She raised her cubs. 3She raised one of her cubs,
and he became a strong young lion.
He learned to tear apart his prey,
and he ate people. 4The nations heard about him.
He was caught in their pit.
They led him away with hooks
to the land of Egypt. 5She saw that she had waited for nothing.
She saw that her hope was gone.
So she took another of her cubs
and made him a strong young lion. 6He prowled among the lions
and became a strong young lion.
He learned to tear apart his prey,
and he ate people. 7He broke down their forts
and ruined their cities.
The land and everything in it shook
at the sound of his roar. 8Then the nations came against him
from the lands on every side.
They threw their net over him.
He was caught in their pit. 9They put him in a cage with hooks.
They brought him to the king of Babylon.
They took him away as a captive.
So his roar was heard no more
on the mountains of Israel. 10Your mother was like a vine in your vineyard.
It was planted by the water.
It was full of fruit and branches
because there was plenty of water. 11It had strong branches,
good enough to make a ruler's scepter.
It grew tall above the thick branches.
Everyone could see how tall it was
and how many leaves it had. 12But it was pulled up in fury.
It was thrown down to the ground.
The east wind dried up its fruit.
Its strong branches were broken off and dried up.
The fire burned them up. 13Now it is planted in the wilderness,
in a dry and thirsty land. 14Fire has spread from its main branch
and burned up its fruit.
No strong branch is left on it
that is good enough to be a ruler's scepter.'
This is a sad song, and it will be used as a sad song."
