1And God spoke all these words: 2"I am the LORD your God. I brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the land where you were slaves. 3You shall have no other gods before me. 4You shall not make for yourself an idol. Do not make one in the shape of anything in the sky above, on the earth below, or in the waters under the earth. 5You shall not bow down to them or worship them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God. I punish the children for the sin of their fathers. I punish them to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me. 6But I show faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commands. 7You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let anyone go unpunished who misuses his name.a 8Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9Six days you shall work and do all your jobs. 10But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you must not do any work. This is for you and your son and daughter. It is for your male and female servants and your animals. It is also for the foreigner who lives in your towns. 11For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them. But on the seventh day he rested. So the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy. 12Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long time in the land the LORD your God is giving you. 13You shall not murder. 14You shall not commit adultery. 15You shall not steal. 16You shall not tell lies about your neighbor as a witness.b 17You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, or his ox or donkey. Do not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor."c 18All the people saw the thunder and lightning. They heard the ram's horn blowing. They saw the mountain covered in smoke. They shook with fear and stood far away. 19They said to Moses, "You speak to us, and we will listen. But don't let God speak to us, or we will die." 20Moses replied, "Don't be afraid. God has come to test you. He wants you to fear him, so you will not sin." 21The people stood far away while Moses went near the thick darkness where God was. 22Then the LORD said to Moses, "This is what you must tell the Israelites: 'You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven. 23Do not make any gods to put next to me. Do not make gods of silver or gold for yourselves. 24Make an altar of dirt for me. On it offer your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep, goats, and cattle. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you. 25If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with stones cut with tools. If you use a chisel on it, you will make it unclean. 26And do not go up to my altar on steps. If you do, your private parts might be seen.'"
