1Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD:
"I will sing to the LORD, for he is lifted high above all.
He has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea. 2The LORD is my strength and my song.
He has become the one who saves me.
He is my God, and I will praise him.
He is my father's God, and I will lift him high. 3The LORD is a warrior.
The LORD is his name. 4He has thrown Pharaoh's chariots and army into the sea.
The best of his officers have drowned in the Red Sea. 5The deep waters have covered them.
They sank down to the bottom like a stone. 6Your right hand, LORD, is glorious in power.
Your right hand, LORD, has smashed the enemy. 7By your great glory you threw down those who rose against you.
You let loose your burning anger.
It burned them up like dry straw. 8At the blast of breath from your nose, the waters piled up.
The moving waters stood up like a wall.
The deep waters turned thick in the middle of the sea. 9The enemy said, 'I will chase them. I will catch them.
I will divide up what I take from them.
I will stuff myself with it.
I will pull out my sword.
My hand will destroy them.' 10But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them.
They sank like lead in the mighty waters. 11Who among the gods is like you, LORD?
Who is like you?
You are glorious in holiness.
You are honored with praises.
You do amazing wonders. 12You reached out your right hand,
and the earth swallowed them up. 13With faithful love you will lead the people you have redeemed.
With your strength you will guide them to your holy home. 14The nations will hear and shake with fear.
Great pain will grab the people who live in Philistia. 15Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified.
The leaders of Moab will tremble.
The people who live in Canaan will melt away, 16and terror and fear will fall on them.
The power of your arm will make them as still as a stone,
until your people pass by, LORD,
until the people you have bought pass by. 17You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain.
It is the place, LORD, that you made ready for your home.
It is the holy place, Lord, that your hands have built. 18The LORD will rule as king forever and ever!" 19Pharaoh's horses, chariots, and horsemen went into the sea. Then the LORD brought the waters of the sea back over them. But the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. 20Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand. All the women followed her, playing tambourines and dancing. 21And Miriam sang back to them:
"Sing to the LORD, for he is lifted high above all.
He has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea." 22Then Moses led Israel away from the Red Sea. They went out into the Desert of Shur. For three days they walked in the desert and found no water. 23Then they came to Marah. But they could not drink the water there because it was bitter. (That is why the place was named Marah.)a 24So the people complained against Moses. They said, "What are we going to drink?" 25Moses cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD gave them a law and a rule to live by. And there he tested them. 26He said, "If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his laws, then I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you." 27Then they came to Elim. There were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees there. They camped there by the water.
