1Be careful to obey every command I am giving you today. Then you will live and grow in number. You will go in and take over the land the LORD promised with an oath to give your fathers. 2Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way through the wilderness these 40 years. He did it to humble you and test you. He wanted to know what was in your heart. He wanted to see if you would keep his commands or not. 3He humbled you and let you go hungry. Then he fed you with manna. You and your fathers had never known about it before. He did this to teach you that people do not live on bread alone. They live on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. 4Your clothes did not wear out, and your feet did not swell during these 40 years. 5So know this in your heart. A father trains and corrects his son. In the same way, the LORD your God trains and corrects you. 6So keep the commands of the LORD your God. Walk in his ways and fear him. 7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land. It is a land of streams and pools of water. Springs flow out in its valleys and hills. 8It is a land of wheat and barley, of grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates. It is a land of olive oil and honey. 9In that land you will have plenty of food to eat. You will not need anything. Its rocks have iron in them. You can dig copper out of its hills. 10When you have eaten and are full, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. 11Be careful not to forget the LORD your God. Do not fail to keep his commands, rules, and laws that I am giving you today. 12Otherwise, when you eat and are full, and when you build nice houses and live in them, 13and when your herds and flocks grow large, and your silver and gold increase, and everything you have grows, 14then your heart will become proud. You will forget the LORD your God. He brought you out of the land of Egypt, where you were slaves. 15He led you through the huge and terrible wilderness. It had poisonous snakes and scorpions. It was a dry land with no water. He brought you water out of hard rock. 16He fed you manna in the wilderness. Your fathers had never known about it. He did this to humble you and test you. Then in the end he could do good things for you. 17You might think to yourself, "I got all this wealth by my own power and strength." 18But remember the LORD your God. He is the one who gives you the power to get wealth. He does it to keep his covenant, which he promised your fathers with an oath. He still keeps it today. 19If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods to worship them and bow down to them, I warn you today that you will surely perish. 20The LORD has destroyed nations ahead of you. If you do not obey the LORD your God, you will perish just like them.
