1These are the commands, laws, and rules the LORD your God told me to teach you. Follow them in the land you are about to enter and take over. 2Then you, your children, and your grandchildren will fear the LORD your God all your lives. You will keep all his laws and commands that I give you. And you will live a long time. 3Listen, Israel, and be careful to obey them. Then things will go well for you. You will grow into a great many people in a land flowing with milk and honey. This is what the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you. 4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6Keep these words I am commanding you today in your hearts. 7Teach them to your children again and again. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road. Talk about them when you lie down and when you get up. 8Tie them on your hands as reminders. Wear them on your foreheads. 9Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. 10The LORD your God will bring you into the land. He promised with an oath to give it to you. He made that promise to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is a land with great and beautiful cities you did not build. 11It has houses full of all kinds of good things you did not put there. It has wells you did not dig. It has vineyards and olive trees you did not plant. When you eat there and are full, 12be careful not to forget the LORD. He brought you out of the land of Egypt, where you were slaves. 13Fear the LORD your God. Serve him only. Make your promises in his name. 14Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you. 15The LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God. If you follow other gods, the LORD your God will become angry with you. He will wipe you off the face of the earth. 16Do not test the LORD your God, as you tested him at Massah. 17Be sure to keep the commands of the LORD your God. Keep the laws and decrees he has given you. 18Do what is right and good in the LORD's sight. Then things will go well for you. You will go in and take over the good land. The LORD your God promised it with an oath to your fathers. 19He will drive out all your enemies ahead of you, as the LORD has said. 20Someday your son may ask you, "What do these decrees, laws, and rules mean? Why did the LORD our God command you to keep them?" 21Then tell him, "We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt. But the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22We watched as the LORD did great and terrible signs and wonders. He sent them on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on his whole family. 23But he brought us out of there. He led us in and gave us the land he had promised with an oath to our fathers. 24The LORD commanded us to obey all these laws and to fear the LORD our God. Then things will always go well for us, and he will keep us alive. That is how it is today. 25If we are careful to obey all these commands before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness."
