1Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan. Og king of Bashan and his whole army came out to fight us at Edrei. 2But the LORD said to me, "Don't be afraid of him. I have handed him over to you. I have given you all his people and his land too. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon." 3So the LORD our God also handed Og king of Bashan and his whole army over to us. We struck them down until no one was left alive. 4At that time we captured all 60 of his cities. There was not one city we didn't take. We took the whole area of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5All these cities had high walls, with gates and bars to make them strong. There were also many more villages without walls. 6We completely destroyed them as an offering to the LORD. We did what we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon. We destroyed the men, women, and children of every city.a 7But we kept all the livestock and the goods from the cities for ourselves. 8At that time we took land from the two kings of the Amorites. It was the land east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Valley to Mount Hermon. 9The people of Sidon call Mount Hermon Sirion. The Amorites call it Senir. 10We took all the cities of the high plain, and all of Gilead. We took all of Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities in the kingdom of Og. 11(Og king of Bashan was the last one left of the Rephaim. His bed was made of iron. It was about 13 feet long and 6 feet wide. It is still in Rabbah of the Ammonites.)b 12So at that time we took over this land. I gave land to the tribes of Reuben and Gad. I gave them the land past Aroer along the Arnon Valley. I also gave them half the hill country of Gilead, with its cities. 13I gave the rest of Gilead to half the tribe of Manasseh. I also gave them all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og. (The whole area of Argob, all of Bashan, used to be called the land of the Rephaim.) 14Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole area of Argob. He took it as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites. He named Bashan after himself. He called it Havvoth-jair, and it still has that name today. 15I gave Gilead to Machir. 16I gave the tribes of Reuben and Gad the land from Gilead down to the Arnon Valley. The middle of the valley was the border. Their land went up to the Jabbok River, which is the border of the Ammonites. 17Their western border was the Jordan River in the Arabah. It ran from Chinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah, which is the Salt Sea. The slopes of Pisgah were to the east. 18At that time I gave you this command: "The LORD your God has given you this land to own. But all your brave men must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites. They must be armed for battle. 19But your wives, your children, and your livestock may stay in the cities I have given you. I know you have a lot of livestock. 20Help your fellow Israelites until the LORD gives them rest, as he has given you. They must also take over the land the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan. Then each of you may go back to the land I have given you." 21At that time I also gave Joshua a command. I said, "You have seen with your own eyes all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings. The LORD will do the same to all the kingdoms you are going into. 22Don't be afraid of them. The LORD your God himself will fight for you." 23At that time I also begged the LORD. I said, 24"O Lord GOD, you have begun to show me, your servant, how great and powerful you are. There is no god in heaven or on earth who can do the mighty things you do! 25Please let me cross over and see the good land across the Jordan. Let me see that lovely hill country and Lebanon!" 26But the LORD was angry with me because of you. He would not listen to me. The LORD said to me, "That's enough! Don't speak to me about this again. 27Go up to the top of Pisgah. Look west, north, south, and east. See the land with your own eyes. You will not cross this Jordan. 28But give Joshua his orders. Encourage him and make him strong. He will lead these people across. He will help them take as their own the land you will see." 29So we stayed in the valley across from Beth-peor.
