1Then Moses and the elders of Israel gave the people a command. They said, "Keep all the commands I am giving you today. 2The LORD your God is giving you a land. On the day you cross the Jordan into it, set up some large stones. Cover them with plaster. 3When you have crossed over to go into the land the LORD your God is giving you, write all the words of this law on them. It is a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you. 4When you have crossed the Jordan, set up these stones on Mount Ebal. Do it just as I am commanding you today. Cover them with plaster. 5Also build an altar there to the LORD your God. Make it an altar of stones. Do not use any iron tool on the stones. 6Build the altar of the LORD your God with stones that have not been cut. Offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God. 7Sacrifice your peace offerings there. Eat them there and be glad in front of the LORD your God. 8Write all the words of this law on these stones. Write them very clearly." 9Then Moses and the priests, who were Levites, spoke to all Israel. They said, "Be quiet, Israel, and listen! Today you have become the people of the LORD your God. 10So obey the voice of the LORD your God. Follow his commands and his rules that I am giving you today." 11On that same day Moses gave the people this command: 12"When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes will stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. 13And these tribes will stand on Mount Ebal to speak the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. 14Then the Levites will call out in a loud voice to every person in Israel: 15'Cursed is the man who makes a carved idol or a metal idol and sets it up in secret. It is the work of a craftsman's hands. The LORD hates it.' Then all the people must say, 'Amen!' 16'Cursed is anyone who dishonors his father or mother.' Then all the people must say, 'Amen!' 17'Cursed is anyone who moves his neighbor's boundary stone.' Then all the people must say, 'Amen!' 18'Cursed is anyone who leads a blind man the wrong way on the road.' Then all the people must say, 'Amen!' 19'Cursed is anyone who keeps justice from the foreigner, the orphan, or the widow.' Then all the people must say, 'Amen!' 20'Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his father's wife. He has shamed his father's marriage bed.' Then all the people must say, 'Amen!' 21'Cursed is anyone who has sex with any animal.' Then all the people must say, 'Amen!' 22'Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his sister. This means his father's daughter or his mother's daughter.' Then all the people must say, 'Amen!' 23'Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his mother-in-law.' Then all the people must say, 'Amen!' 24'Cursed is anyone who kills his neighbor in secret.' Then all the people must say, 'Amen!' 25'Cursed is anyone who takes a bribe to kill an innocent person.' Then all the people must say, 'Amen!' 26'Cursed is anyone who does not do what the words of this law say.' Then all the people must say, 'Amen!'
