1A man may marry a woman. But then he may not be pleased with her because he finds something indecent about her. He may write her a paper of divorce. He gives it to her and sends her away from his house. 2After she leaves his house, she may go and marry another man. 3Then the second man may hate her. He may write her a paper of divorce, give it to her, and send her away from his house. Or the second man may die. 4Then the first husband who divorced her may not marry her again. She has been made unclean. That would be disgusting to the LORD. Do not bring sin on the land the LORD your God is giving you as your own. 5If a man has just gotten married, he must not be sent to war. He must not be given any other duty. For one year he is free to stay home and make the wife he married happy. 6Do not take a pair of millstones as a promise that a debt will be paid. Do not even take the top millstone. That would be taking the way a person makes a living. 7A man may be caught kidnapping one of his fellow Israelites. He may treat him like a slave or sell him. That kidnapper must die. So you must get rid of the evil among you. 8When there is a skin disease that spreads, be very careful to do everything the priests, who are Levites, tell you. Be careful to do what I have commanded them. 9Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam on the trip after you came out of Egypt. 10When you lend anything to your neighbor, do not go into his house to get what he gives you as a promise to pay. 11Stand outside. Let the man you are lending to bring it out to you. 12If he is a poor man, do not go to sleep while you still have what he gave you. 13Be sure to give it back to him by sunset. Then he can sleep in his own cloak, and he will bless you. And it will be credited to you as righteousness before the LORD your God. 14Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy. This is true whether he is your fellow Israelite or a foreigner living in one of your towns. 15Pay him what he has earned each day before the sun goes down. He is poor, and he needs that money. If you don't, he may cry out to the LORD against you. And you will be guilty of sin. 16Fathers must not be put to death for what their children did. Children must not be put to death for what their fathers did. Each person must die for his own sin. 17Do not treat the foreigner or the orphan unfairly. Do not take a widow's cloak as a promise to pay. 18Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. And the LORD your God redeemed you from there. That is why I am commanding you to do this. 19When you gather the crops in your field, you may forget a bundle of grain. Do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the orphan, and the widow. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all the work you do. 20When you beat your olive trees to knock the olives down, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what is left for the foreigner, the orphan, and the widow. 21When you pick the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines a second time. Leave what is left for the foreigner, the orphan, and the widow. 22Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt. That is why I am commanding you to do this.
