1At that time the LORD said to me, "Cut out two stone tablets like the first ones. Come up to me on the mountain. And make an ark out of wood. 2I will write on the tablets the same words that were on the first tablets, the ones you broke. Then you must put them in the ark." 3So I made an ark out of acacia wood. I cut out two stone tablets like the first ones. Then I went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. 4The LORD wrote on the tablets what he had written before. It was the Ten Commandments. He had spoken them to you on the mountain from the fire, on the day all of you gathered there. And the LORD gave them to me. 5Then I turned and went back down the mountain. I put the tablets in the ark I had made, just as the LORD commanded me. They are still there today. 6The Israelites traveled from the wells of Bene-jaakan to Moserah. Aaron died there and was buried there. His son Eleazar took his place as priest.a 7From there they traveled to Gudgodah. From Gudgodah they went on to Jotbathah, a land with streams of water. 8At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi. Their job was to carry the ark of the LORD's covenant. They were to stand before the LORD and serve him. And they were to speak blessings in his name. They still do this today. 9That is why Levi has no share of land like his brothers. The LORD himself is Levi's share, just as the LORD your God promised him. 10I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, just like the first time. And this time too the LORD listened to me. He agreed not to destroy you. 11Then the LORD said to me, "Get up. Go on your way and lead the people. Then they can go in and take the land I swore to their fathers to give them." 12And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you? He asks you to fear the LORD your God and to walk in all his ways. He asks you to love him. He asks you to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 13He asks you to keep the LORD's commands and laws that I am giving you today. They are for your own good. 14Look, the heavens belong to the LORD your God, even the highest heavens. The earth and everything in it belong to him too. 15Yet the LORD set his heart on your fathers and loved them. And he chose you, their children after them, out of all the peoples. You are still his chosen ones today. 16So circumcise your hearts. Do not be stubborn anymore.b 17The LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, mighty and awesome. He does not play favorites, and he does not take bribes. 18He makes sure orphans and widows are treated fairly. He loves the foreigner, and he gives him food and clothes. 19So you also must love the foreigner. After all, you were foreigners yourselves in the land of Egypt. 20You must fear the LORD your God and serve him. Hold on tight to him. Make your promises in his name. 21He is the one you praise, and he is your God. He has done these great and awesome wonders for you. You saw them with your own eyes. 22When your fathers went down to Egypt, there were only seventy of them. But now the LORD your God has made you as many as the stars in the sky.
