1This letter is from Paul. I am an apostle of Christ Jesus because God wanted me to be. I was sent to tell about the promise of life in Christ Jesus. 2I am writing to Timothy, my dear son. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace. 3I thank God, whom I serve with a clean conscience as my ancestors did. Night and day I keep remembering you in my prayers. 4I remember your tears, and I long to see you. Then I will be filled with joy. 5I remember your true faith. It lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice. And I am sure it lives in you too. 6That is why I remind you to stir up God's gift like a fire. That gift is in you because I laid my hands on you. 7For God has not given us a spirit of fear. He has given us a spirit of power, love, and self-control. 8So do not be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And do not be ashamed of me, his prisoner. Instead, join me in suffering for the good news. God will give you the power. 9God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did not do it because of anything we did. He did it because of his own plan and his grace. He gave us that grace in Christ Jesus before time began. 10Now he has shown this grace through the coming of our Savior, Christ Jesus. Christ has destroyed death. Through the good news he has shined light on life that never dies. 11God chose me to be a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of this good news. 12That is why I am suffering like this. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one I have believed. And I am sure he is able to guard what I have trusted to him until that day. 13Hold on to the pattern of true teaching you heard from me. Hold it with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14Guard the treasure that was trusted to you. Do it with the help of the Holy Spirit, who lives in us. 15You know that everyone in the province of Asia has left me. That includes Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16May the Lord show mercy to the family of Onesiphorus. He often cheered me up. He was not ashamed that I was in chains. 17In fact, when he came to Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. 18May the Lord show Onesiphorus mercy on that day! You know very well how much he helped me in Ephesus.
